Superficial snack: wintery wedding makeup tutorial

I've been watching the vids from the totally charismatic Marlena from Makeup Geek on Youtube for ages, and love this particular tutorial for an icy, winter makeup look. It would be rad for a winter wedding (or holiday party). I especially love the blue glitter liner, which is sparkly without looking like you might also be attending a rave at the after-party. Although that sounds kinda cool now that I think on it.

But I digress! There are lots of other good tutorials to match your wedding color scheme, but this one is my fave.

NLRB Adopts Union Elections Rule; Chamber Files Suit in Response

The U.S. National Labor Relations Board has adopted a rule change that would streamline union-forming elections and delay the appeals process. In response, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce filed a lawsuit Tuesday in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to halt the rule.

The rule, adopted from a resolution passed by the board Nov. 30, would grant more power to hearing officers who preside over labor union pre-election hearings and delay the appeals process until after the election. Supporters of the new rule say it will reduce unnecessary litigation and delays in the election process.

Chairman Mark Pearce and board member Craig Becker voted in favor of the rule change. Brian Hayes, the board?s sole Republican, had yet to cast his vote as of Wednesday. The rule will go into effect April 30, 2012. Hayes has until that date to submit a dissenting statement.

When employers and their employees disagree about who is eligible to vote, the matter is referred to a regional office for a hearing. The NLRB contends that about 10% of elections go through the hearing process.

Under the new rule, debate during the hearing will be limited to whether or not an election should occur. The officer administering the hearing will also have the authority to limit testimony.

?This rule is about giving all employees who have petitioned for an election the right to vote in a timely manner and without the impediment of needless litigation,? Pearce said in a written statement.

The complaint filed Tuesday by the Chamber also names the Coalition for a Democratic Workplace as a plaintiff. On Wednesday, the Chamber amended its complaint.

In the amended complaint, attorneys with Morgan, Lewis & Bockius wrote on behalf of the Chamber, the firm's client, that the rule ?curtails an employer?s right to communicate with its employees by substantially shortening the election period? and that ?[u]nless enjoined, the [r]ule will cause immediate, irreparable damage to Plaintiffs and their members.?

Plaintiffs are asking the court to deem the rule ?arbitrary, capricious, an abuse of power and/or otherwise not in accordance with law.?

Jonathan Fritts, a Morgan Lewis partner working on the case, said the new rule limits an employer?s right to determine prior to the election who is eligible to vote. Fritts said that disputes often arise as to whether supervisors are eligible to vote, as they may be considered part of management and thus ineligible.

?What the rule does is afford the hearing officer the ability to limit evidence and litigation of issues concerning who is eligible to vote in the election,? Fritts said. Delaying the appeals process until after the election can create confusion about who is eligible to vote and who can speak on behalf of the employer, he added.

In a written statement, AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka said the board took a ?modest but important step? with the passage of the rule, but said that ?many more improvements are needed to protect workers? rights.?

?We hope the Board will quickly move to adopt the rest of its proposed reforms to modernize and streamline the election process,? Trumka said, referring to additional rules proposed by the board in June but later dropped from the Nov. 30 resolution.

National Guard at border cut to fewer than 300 (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration will keep a reduced contingent of National Guard troops working along the Mexican border for the next year, the Defense Department said Tuesday.

Starting in January, the force of 1,200 National Guard troops at the border will be reduced to fewer than 300 at a cost of about $60 million, said Paul Stockton, assistant secretary of defense for homeland defense.

The remaining troops will shift their focus from patrolling the border on the ground looking for illegal immigrants and smugglers to aerial surveillance missions using military helicopters and airplanes equipped with high-tech radar and other gear. Exactly where those troops will fly or how many aircraft will be used has not been decided, he said.

"We are basically going from boots on the ground to boots in the air," said David Aguilar, deputy commissioner for Customs and Border Protection.

Border Patrol Chief Michael Fisher said his agency is working on identifying the "areas of greatest concern" along the border ? areas that include Arizona and South Texas ? and will station troops and aircraft accordingly.

President Barack Obama ordered a second round of Guard troops to the border last year, with the first of those troops arriving in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas in August 2010. President George W. Bush first ordered Guard troops to the southern from 2006 to 2008. They were supposed to be in place for about a year but Obama extended the deployment earlier this year. The smaller force is now expected to remain until the end of 2012.

Stockton said the remaining troops are "transitioning to much more effective support."

"This provides us with more flexibility in dealing with the persistent challenges posed by cross-border movement and illegal crossings," Stockton said.

According to the Government Accountability Office, the Pentagon has previously spent about $1.35 billion for the deployments under Bush and Obama.

Stockton said the Pentagon has budgeted about $60 million for the mission in 2012.

Congressional Republicans have objected to reducing the number of troops, arguing that the border isn't secure and reducing the number of people patrolling the area doesn't help security.

"If the Obama administration's goal is border security, their actions undermine their objective," said Rep. Lamar Smith, a Texas Republican and chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. "The administration's decision to draw down the National Guard troops along the U.S-Mexico border makes an already porous border worse."

Aguilar, who previously led the Border Patrol, said Tuesday there is still work to be done at the border but that successes in securing the frontier have allowed DHS to reduce the number of troops and change the mission.

In the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30 Border Patrol agents at the southern border made 327,577 arrests, the fewest since 1972. There are also more than 18,500 agents patrolling the border, the highest number in the agency's history.

When Bush first deployed the National Guard, there were just over 11,000 Border Patrol agents in the area who made more than one million arrests.

NORAD Santa trackers stand by for another big day

DENVER (AP) ? Santa already is piling up big numbers on social networking sites this season, so the volunteer Santa-trackers at NORAD are bracing for tens of thousands of calls and emails when their operations center goes live on Christmas Eve.

"We expect our numbers to be very high this year," said Joyce Creech, project leader for NORAD Tracks Santa at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Last year, NORAD Tracks Santa volunteers answered 80,000 phone calls on Christmas Eve, Creech said. They also answered 7,000 emails.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command has been telling anxious children about Santa's whereabouts every year since 1955. That was the year a Colorado Springs newspaper ad invited kids to call Santa on a hotline, but the number had a typo, and dozens of kids wound up talking to the Continental Aerospace Defense Command, NORAD's predecessor.

The officers on duty played along and began sharing reports on Santa's progress. It's now a deep-rooted tradition at NORAD, a joint U.S.-Canada command that monitors the North American skies and seas from a control center at Peterson.

NORAD's Santa updates are just about everywhere ? on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, www.noradsanta.org and television. And this year, there's a new Santa-tracking app for smart phone s, built by visionbox, a Colorado Springs software developer.

It has the Elf Toss, a game similar to Angry Birds.

The app was downloaded more than 234,000 times from Android Market and iTunes App Store by mid-December, Creech said.

NORAD Tracks Santa already has had more than 754,000 "likes" on Facebook this year, compared with 716,000 through Christmas Eve last year. Twitter numbers also are up, with 60,000 followers so far this year, up from 54,000 last season.

The NORAD Tracks Santa website has had more than 2.2 million unique visitors this year, compared with 2 million last year.

The rows of telephones in the operations center are still the heart of the operation. More than 1,200 volunteers answer calls in shifts, checking big-screen computer monitors indicating Santa's location and passing that along to children, many who seem dumbstruck.

"It's just so precious to hear the little sigh or (only) breathing on the other end, and you realize how nervous they are," Creech said.

"But we've had really heart-wrenching stories as well," she said. "'Can you ask Santa to heal my brother of cancer?' Or, 'Can I get a new pair of shoes? I don't have any.'"

Calls like that make the volunteers feel fortunate to have what they do, she said.

NORAD Tracks Santa has added 20 phones this year, bringing the total to 120, and four more laptops, for a total of 23. The phones will be answered from 4 a.m. Mountain Time on Christmas Eve until 3 a.m. Christmas Day.

Creech said the rising numbers are probably a reflection of how much people look forward to the season, and how much of a tradition calling NORAD has become for many families.

"You can tell that it really brings people joy, and especially kids," she said.

ASUS Transformer Prime pre-order shipments delayed at Best Buy, Amazon

ASUS' Eee Pad Transformer Prime has already suffered a few setbacks on its march to the US market and unfortunately, it looks as if another obstacle may be on the horizon. According to a handful of tips we've received this morning, Best Buy has been sending out emails to users who pre-ordered the new tablet for delivery this week, informing them that shipments have been "back-ordered," and delayed by one to two weeks. This means, of course, that some buyers may not receive the device until after Christmas. In its email, Best Buy gave its customers the option of canceling their orders outright, replacing it with a similar device, or searching the product at a brick and mortar location (a customer service rep told us that there are no stores that currently have the Transformer Prime in stock). Some who ordered the slate on Amazon, meanwhile, have received emails informing them that their orders were "inadvertently canceled," and offering them the chance to pre-order it again today, along with a $10 gift card to make up for the inconvenience. We asked ASUS about the Transformer Prime's delivery status, and received the following response:

We started filling the pipelines this past week and will continue to do so on an almost daily basis this coming week, although any shipments to the partners after Wednesday will probably mean availability the following week based on logistics. But we expect the inventory pipeline to be full by the first of the year. The orders shipped this past week and starting this week will cover the pre-order allocations and then start allowing online or in-store availability.

No brakes on breast cancer cells

MicroRNAs or miRNAs are tiny RNA molecules that have only about 20 nucleotides and do not code for proteins. They regulate many important processes in cells by binding to target messenger RNAs ? the instructions for protein production ?, thus blocking production of the respective protein. In cancer, the production of some miRNAs is often reduced or amplified. This particularly affects miRNAs that regulate the activity of cancer-promoting genes.

A key molecule in the development of cancer is a transcription factor called NFkappaB, which is an important switch for many genes with inflammation-promoting effects. At DKFZ, Professor Dr. Stefan Wiemann and collaborators have now investigated whether microRNAs that affect NFkappaB production are deregulated in breast cancer. Jointly with colleagues at Heidelberg and Tuebingen University Hospitals, the DKFZ team studied over 800 miRNAs and discovered a family of RNA molecules known as miR-520, which particularly strongly reduce the production of NFkappaB. "If the cells produce less NFkappaB, the production of inflammation-promoting signaling molecules is reduced. This puts a brake on cancer growth, because these signaling molecules promote invasive capacity, formation of new vessels and metastasis," says Ioanna Keklikoglou, a doctoral student Wiemann's department, explaining this mechanism.

However, miR-520 does not only act like a cancer brake by suppressing NFkappaB. In addition, Wiemann's team discovered that this microRNA also blocks another cancer-promoting signaling pathway that is triggered by growth factor TGF-beta. TGF-beta signals cause malignant cells to be less firmly anchored in the tissue and, thus, better able to invade surrounding organs ? a characteristic feature of cancer cells.

Subsequently, the DKFZ researchers studied the question of whether the findings obtained in cancer cells in the culture dish are also involved in breast cancer. Studying tumor tissue samples of 76 patients, the team discovered that tumors which have already spread to the lymph nodes produce less miR-520 than those which have not yet spread. However, this connection was only found in tumors that do not produce receptors for the female sexual hormone, estrogen (ER-negative tumors).

"Our findings clearly demonstrate that miR-520 is a genuine cancer brake that suppresses the malignant behavior of tumor cells in two different ways at once," said Stefan Wiemann, commenting on the findings reported in his now published work. "This cancer brake appears to fail in many ER-negative breast tumors ? and also in cells of other types of cancer, as colleagues have now demonstrated." ER-negative breast cancer is particularly difficult to treat in many cases. Developing a microRNA therapy that blocks several cancer-promoting signaling pathways at once may therefore be an interesting option.

NEW YORK, NY --? A?festive and celebratory mood quickly turned tense and angry Saturday as New York police arrested about 50 Occupy Wall Street protesters at?a church-owned lot demonstrators?had hoped to use as a?camp site.

A dozen or so protesters climbed a wooden?ladder into the fenced?lot at Duarte Square, witnesses said. One of them was George E. Packard, an Occupy Wall Street supporter and retired Episcopal bishop to the Armed Forces and Chaplaincies, according to J.A. Myerson, a writer with Truthout.

Several hundred people gathered across the street, where dozens of police tried to clear sidewalks as?people shouted and screamed at them. After the arrests, a few hundred protesters made a?blocks-long, late-afternoon march to the church rectory chanting, "For every eviction another occupation" and "Bloomberg beware, Zuccotti Park is everywhere." They later headed uptown to Times Square.?

Legal sources say about 50 people were arrested, though the NYPD press office said late Saturday they did not have the arrest tally and protesters were still being arrested.

"This whole occupation has been a lesson in freedom for me," said Ashley Perry, 24, who traveled from her home in Tampa, Fla., to support her New York counterparts. "If you still think that you?have your First Amendment rights, go out and try to express them? and see how long it takes for someone to come?and shut you down -- it will happen quickly."

Earlier in the day, demonstrators played drums, cymbals and trombones, held group meetings and waved signs with a variety of messages -- "Disobedience is civil" and "Sorry to inconvenience your apathy" -- as they marked the completion of three?months with a major direct action that they hoped would give them a new home as authorities continue to shutter camps nationwide.?

Protesters -- flanked by police officers -- coalesced on the nearly half-acre plot about one mile northwest of their former camp at Zuccotti Park. But their potential new landlord at Duarte Square, Trinity Church, had long voiced strong opposition.

"In all good conscience and faith, we strongly believe to do so would be wrong, unsafe, unhealthy and potentially injurious," its rector, The Rev. Dr. James H. Cooper, said in a statement dated Dec. 9 and posted to the church website. "The health, safety and security problems posed by an encampment here, compounded by winter weather, would dwarf those experienced at Zuccotti Park. Calling this an issue of 'political sanctuary' is manipulative and blind to reality."

Linda Hanick, a spokeswoman for the church, said earlier this week that their position would not change and on Friday, a statement from the city's bishop sided with Trinity.

Under the banner of "Re-Occupy," the protesters said more than 1,400 people -- elders of the civil rights movement, prominent artists, faith leaders and community members -- would help them try and set up camp. The total numbers were not known, though several hundred people appeared to have joined the effort, with people being photographed at the "99% photobooth," while others danced around musicians and chanted, "Occupy." A group of hunger strikers with a sign reading "Day 15" also gathered at the site.

"I'm just loving seeing everybody from Zuccotti Park and it really puts an exclamation point on the (question) that's been asked today so many times, 'Do you guys need a space?' ... and the answer is, 'yes.' When you walk around and see the familiar faces and the kindred spirits and the unification of effort, then you realize yes we do need a space so that we can all be together and function as whole as a group and move forward, no doubt," said Thorin Caristo, a 37-year-old protester who is part of an independent livestream team.

Occupy Wall Street said in a statement ahead of the day: "Outdoor public space plays a crucial role in this civic process and encourages open, transparent organizing in our movement, unbeholden to a broken political system.?As we saw in Liberty Square (Zuccotti Park), outdoor space invites people to listen, speak, share, learn, and act.?It is a source of inspiration and empowerment."

Trinity Church has provided the protesters with meeting rooms and use of their neighborhood center, but rejected an earlier attempt on Nov. 15 by the protesters to move into the Duarte Square lot. The church's operations include an Episcopal parish, a commercial realty business and a grant-making organization.

"Here's a extremely wealthy church ... that can choose between its real estate empire and its conscience. This would be a big help to social justice organizing," Bill Dobbs, of the public relations working group, said Friday.

Occupy think tank working group meets at Duarte Square in lower Manhattan as part of their bid to set up a new camp.

Dobbs said the movement had suffered a "setback" with the loss of its camp, but the organizing and protests had continued. Still, "it sure is helpful to have ? a center of gravity," he added.

One of the former leaders of the Students for a Democratic Society, Todd Gitlin, said that if the protesters didn't get the site, it was not a big deal, noting that Occupy Wall Street had become a more organized structure since it began with events going on continuously: "I think it's always a mistake to judge very much from what happens on a particular day."

Gitlin noted the movement currently "stands on the sidewalks."

"It's in the process of adjusting to two things: Number one, the loss of camps, and number two, we stand on the brink of an election year," Gitlin, a professor of sociology and journalism, said standing near the fence encircling the proposed new camp. "The eviction means that what was already a major tendency in the movement is even more prominent now, namely decentralism. It's dispersed. Lots of things are going on all the time."

Not all protesters agreed with how the day's actions came about, noting that an affinity group (one that shares the values and opinions of the movement), "kind of did this without the real consent of Occupy Wall Street," said Jason Harris, who had lived in the movement's Zuccotti Park encampment.

"A lot of people in Occupy Wall Street ... think that it sets a dangerous precedent that affinity groups can use the name, idea and basically assume sponsorship by Occupy Wall Street to do basically things that they decide they think that they need to do, which aren't necessarily in the best interests logistically" of the movement, said Harris, now a university student in public policy, adding that Trinity Church had been a "bit of an ally" to the group. "Although this is wonderful, I'm afraid of how kind of autonomous actions by affinity groups within OWS could potentially damage Occupy Wall Street."

Another protester, Tim Taylor, a student and former Marine from Seattle aged in his 40s, said he was a little disappointed in the turnout.

"It?s going to take a huge impact and that impact is? basically the volume of people, to see you know Manhattan filled with 50,000, 100,000, 150,000 people and to disrupt an average person?s moment in the day ? then you start to make an impact," he said as protesters marched to the city?s midtown neighborhood, passing by police with orange mesh used to kettle demonstrators. "But it shows promise that, you know, it?s a young organization that?s only been around for three months ? and it?s spread around the country, if not even around the world. ...

"Nothing is ever easy and nothing is ever quick," he added. "You have to put in an effort and you have to work for it, and this group shows that they?re willing to do that."

Israel prepares for second stage of prisoner swap (Reuters)

JERUSALEM (Reuters) ? Israel began preparations on Thursday to release 550 Palestinian prisoners in the second stage of a deal with Hamas that brought home soldier Gilad Shalit after five years of captivity in the Gaza Strip.

Israel's Prisons Service posted on its website the list of prisoners whose jail terms are to be cut and a spokeswoman said they would be assembled in two jails prior to release on Sunday.

Israeli citizens have 48 hours to contest the releases in court, though historically the judiciary has chosen not to intervene in prisoner exchanges which it views as a political decision.

In the first stage of the Egyptian-mediated prisoner exchange, the most lopsided in Israel's history, 450 Palestinians were released on October 18 in return for Shalit.

While many of those freed in the first phase of the deal were serving life sentences for deadly attacks, none of the prisoners to be released in the second stage was convicted of killings. Their terms ranged from a few months to 18 years.

Shalit was abducted in June 2006 by militants who tunneled into Israel from the Gaza Strip and surprised his tank crew, killing two of his comrades. He was held incommunicado in the Hamas-ruled territory and huge majority of Israelis backed the deal to bring him home.

The Prisons Service said nearly all the Palestinians to be released on Sunday -- whose convictions include attempted murder, planting bombs and membership in militant groups -- come from the West Bank where Hamas's rival, the Fatah movement of Western-backed President Mahmoud Abbas, is dominant.

Rosenthal?s take: The Bucs are slump busters. The Panthers defense couldn?t stop anyone, but they could stop the Bucs. Jacksonville?s offense couldn?t score on anyone, but they could score on Tampa. This game is exactly what Jason Garrett and the ?Boys need.

Rosenthal?s take: It?s weird and a little sad that J.P. Losman?s status decides my pick. If Matt Moore is out, I like Buffalo. Bills fans will happily tell you not to bet on J.P. Losman in Buffalo. Florio?s take:? If the Bears had Jay Cutler and Matt Forte, they?d be the clear pick to win.? But they don?t, and if they can?t beat the Chiefs at home without these key players, they?ll have a rough time handling an underrated Seahawks team.? The bell continues to toll for the Bears, whose only remaining hope will be to do to the Packers on December 25 what the Dolphins did to the Bears in 1985.

Florio?s pick:? Seahawks 14, Bears 7.

Rosenthal?s take: Bears fans swore Chicago could go 4-2 or 3-3 at worst with Caleb Hanie to close the season. They haven?t won a game yet. Seattle, meanwhile, has won four of five because of a physical defense and running game. After this game, the Seahawks will have a better chance to make the playoffs.

Rosenthal?s pick: Seattle 16, Bears 13.

Panthers at Texans

Florio?s take:? The Texans keep losing key components.? And the Texans just keep winning.? This one won?t be easy without defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, but the Texans simply continue to find a way.

Rosenthal?s take: If Cam Newton and T.J. Yates faced off last year, Yates? team would not be favored by a touchdown. Things change quickly. The Texans are a defense tough enough to withstand the loss of their best pass rusher. They can survive losing their playcaller for a week or two.

Titans at Colts

Florio?s take:? It?s time.? Call it a gut feeling.? Call it a hunch.? Call it clinical insanity.? But it?s time for the Colts to win a game.? Especially since this very well could be their last chance to avoid going 0-16 and getting everyone not named Jim Irsay fired.

Florio?s pick:? Colts 19, Titans 17.

Rosenthal?s take: The Colts look likely to face three straight rookie quarterbacks. Unfortunately, Jake Locker isn?t a huge downgrade from Matt Hasselbeck. The Titans offense is different with Locker, but not necessarily worse. The Titans are just mediocre enough to let the Colts make this interesting.

Packers at Chiefs

Florio?s take:? Interim coach Romeo Crennel could go a long way toward securing the permanent job by winning his first game.? He likely wishes Todd Haley had lasted one more week.

Florio?s pick:? Packers 35, Chiefs 10.

Rosenthal?s take: The Chiefs have enough secondary talent to give the Packers offense some issues. Kansas City certainly upgrades this week at quarterback with Kyle Orton. And that ends the portion of this preview where I try to convince myself this game will stay interesting.

Saints at Vikings

Florio?s take:? From epic NFC title game to overhyped season opener to Cornell-Hofstra slaughter.? Les Steckel gets closer and closer to getting off the hook.

Rosenthal?s take: Drew Brees is peaking at the right time. The Vikings are peeking at the No. 2 overall pick in the draft.? This is the game where Brees makes sure he wins the yardage crown for the season.

Redskins at Giants

Florio?s take:? After the Redskins beat the Giants in Week One, safety Antrell Rolle said that Washington would win five out of 100 games between the two teams.? More recently, Rolle dropped that number to one.? Though we?re not ready to agree with a 99-percent success rate, we?re comfortable with 50.

Florio?s pick:? Giants 28, Redskins 14.

Rosenthal?s take: A Giants? loss Sunday could make next week?s Jets-Giants game almost inconsequential. A win against the Redskins would guarantee Big Blue a ?win and in? scenario in Week 17 against Dallas. Washington is feisty, but they are one-win-in-seven-games feisty. Rex Grossman is just good enough to get you beat.

Rosenthal?s pick: Giants 33, Redskins 28.

Bengals at Rams

Florio?s take:? It won?t be easy to keep a young Bengals team focused and motivated after losing a heartbreaker to the Texans.? But the Bengals are playing the Rams.? The Rams.? Yes, the Rams.

Florio?s pick:? Bengals 34, Rams 14.

Rosenthal?s take: Despite winning seven games last year, the Rams are on pace to have the worst five-year run of any team in NFL history. Steve Spagnuolo coached the worst NFL team in 2009 and the second worst team this year. It may not be fair, but it?s hard to imagine any coach surviving that combination.

Rosenthal?s pick: Bengals 23, Rams 13.

Lions at Raiders

Florio?s take:? The Lions have struggled lately, but the Raiders have struggled more.? Neither team may make it to the postseason after promising starts, but the Lions have at least shown a recent ability to find a way to win.? Plus, while he?s not as dominant as he was in 2010, the return of Ndamukong Suh should help.? The ongoing absence of Darren McFadden doesn?t.

Florio?s pick:? Lions 24, Raiders 20.

Rosenthal?s take: These are two desperate teams that peaked too early. At least the Lions are getting players back: Ndamukong Suh, Kevin Smith, and cornerback Chris Houston all look likely to return for Detroit. The Raiders might get Denarius Moore back. The Lions win that trade.

Rosenthal?s pick: Lions 27, Raiders 24.

Browns at Cardinals

Florio?s take:? Though a little too late, the Cardinals have found their groove, regardless of whether Kevin Kolb or John Skelton is playing quarterback.? With a couple more wins, they?ll be one of the teams we?re all picking to make the playoffs in 2012.? The Browns, on the other hand, continue to be the Browns.

Florio?s pick:? Cardinals 30, Browns 17.

Rosenthal?s take: Skeltonmania is sweeping the nation. The Cardinals are 4-1 in the former Fordham quarterback?s games, winning insane, inexplicable games late in the fourth quarter. They are 2-5 without him. Skelton fever could last into the playoffs. I?d bet on a 9-7 team making the playoffs and the Cardinals should be 7-7 after this one.

Rosenthal?s pick: Cardinals 22, Browns 13.

Patriots at Broncos

Florio?s take:? The list of ?thou shalt nots? now includes a line regarding picking against Tim Tebow.? New England?s defense stinks, and Denver?s defense is good enough to keep it close.? If the Broncos keep it close, the guy who says God has spoken to him will overcome the once little-known sixth-round pick who possibly struck a deal with the devil.

Florio?s pick:? Broncos 24, Patriots 23.

Rosenthal?s take: The Patriots defense can barely slow down Grossmania, so Tim Tebow should have a big day. Tom Brady should be even better. There are weak spots in this Broncos? secondary that Brady can exploit, especially at safety. This result will test Florio?s Tebow man-crush.

Rosenthal?s pick: Patriots 31, Broncos 27.

Jets at Eagles

Florio?s take:? The Dream Team is waking up too late, but not late enough to crush the dreams of Team Rex.? And that will make next week?s Giants-Jets game even more intriguing.

Florio?s pick:? Eagles 27, Jets 23.

Rosenthal?s take: The Eagles won last week, but Michael Vick looked very rusty. The offensive line got pushed around. The Jets are not a defense you want to face when your passing game is out of synch and your line is not recognizing blitzes. The Dream should finally die for good, to the delight of many Eagles fans.

Ravens at Chargers

Florio?s take:? The Ravens finally realize the connection between beating inferior foes and hosting home playoff games.? Chargers fans finally realize that they could have a new coach and G.M. in 2012.? Both could be very happy after Sunday night.

Rosenthal?s take: This is Norv?s last stand, and he has a shot to win. Philip Rivers? pinpoint accuracy returned the last two weeks. So did his pass protection. This is a dangerous game for the Ravens, but it?s hard to imagine Rivers? rag-tag linemen holding up against the Baltimore pass rush.

Comet's death-plunge into sun will be well documented

The ill-fated comet Lovejoy is on course to plow through the sun's blisteringly hot outer atmosphere - called the corona - making its closest approach to our star at around 7 p.m. EST Thursday.

A newly discovered comet is set to make a death dive into the sun's atmosphere today (Dec. 15), and scientists will have a ringside seat to watch its fiery demise.

The ill-fated?comet Lovejoy?is on course to plow through the sun's blisteringly hot outer atmosphere - called the corona - making its closest approach to our star at?around 7 p.m. EST today (midnight GMT on Dec. 16). At that point, Lovejoy should be just 87,000 miles (140,000 kilometers) ?from the solar surface.

The comet is not expected to survive this close encounter, experts have said. But if it's any consolation to Lovejoy, the comet's last hours of existence will be well-documented for posterity.?Scientists have trained a phalanx of satellite instruments on the comet, which is what's known as a Kreutz sungrazer.

Spacecraft watching closely

All?Kreutz sungrazers?? so named because their orbits bring them close to the sun ? are believed to be the remains of one giant comet that broke apart several centuries ago. They're named after 19th-century German astronomer Heinrich Kreutz, who first demonstrated that such comets are related.

Comets dive into the sun on a regular basis, but astronomers don't often get much advance notice of the impending event. That's what makes comet Lovejoy, which is officially known as C/2011 W3 (Lovejoy), special. Australian amateur astronomer Terry Lovejoy discovered it on Nov. 27, so scientists have had several weeks to plan their observation campaign. [Death of a Comet: Photos of Sungrazing Comet Lovejoy]

NASA's Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) and Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) spacecraft will be watching Lovejoy's death plunge closely, as will the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), a satellite mission operated jointly by the European Space Agency and NASA.

Japan's Hinode spacecraft, which carries some NASA instruments, will also record the comet's last moments. Particle collisions may generate X-rays as Lovejoy streaks through the corona, so Hinode might capture X-ray images of the comet, researchers said.

Though comet Lovejoy is just 660 feet (200 meters) or so wide, it should put on quite a show as it nears the sun. The comet could become as bright as Jupiter or Venus in the sky just before it's destroyed, according to the skywatching website?Spaceweather.com.

Possible target for (careful) skywatchers

Lovejoy may end up being one of the brightest Kreutz sungrazers ever seen, researchers said. While the sun's glare will likely hide it from Earthbound skywatchers' eyes, there's a small chance that blocking the sun out ? behind a building, for example ? could bring the comet into view. WARNING: Never look directly at the sun with your unaided eye or through binoculars or telescopes without special light filters. Severe eye damage can result.

The comet will make its close solar approach around sunset for observers across the continental United States, which could afford a viewing opportunity, experts said.

"If you have one of those nice sunsets where you can actually look right at the sun, be on the watch for the comet on the left of the sun (for northern hemisphere observers)," Karl Battams, a scientist at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C., wrote on the?Sungrazing Comets website?Wednesday. Battams runs the site, which is devoted to comets discovered by the SOHO and STEREO spacecraft.

Battams cautioned readers, however, never to point a telescope or binoculars at or near the sun; permanent eye damage can result. Staring directly at the sun with the naked eye is also a very bad idea, so aspiring comet-watchers should exercise great care.

Those of us on the ground may get a spacecraft's-eye view of Lovejoy's demise anyway. NASA is planning to set up a special website showing what its SDO satellite sees during the comet's death dive. The space agency will publish the website's URL sometime this afternoon via its website: http://www.nasa.gov, officials said.

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (AP) ? The brother of MSNBC commentator Chris Matthews is accused of lying to a grand jury investigating political corruption in a suburban Philadelphia county.

Montgomery County Commissioner Jim Matthews was arraigned Tuesday on perjury and false-swearing charges stemming from an 18-month grand jury investigation. He was released on $50,000 unsecured bail.

Prosecutors say Matthews lied about his relationship with a title company that does county business.

Matthews is retiring within weeks. His attorney did not immediately return a phone message.

The investigation also concerned breakfast meetings between Matthews, another commissioner and other county officials. Prosecutors say those meetings appeared to be improper but there was not sufficient evidence to establish they were in violation of the state's Sunshine Act.

Pastor to toss out vote on interracial couples

?The pastor at a Kentucky church says he will nullify a vote taken by members of his congregation that bans interracial couples.

Stacy Stepp, who is pastor of the Gulnare Free Will Baptist Church in Pike County, told the Lexington Herald-Leader on Saturday that he plans to declare the vote approving the policy null and void.

The move comes after Stepp, who says he opposed the policy, asked for advice from the Sandy Valley Conference of Free Will Baptists.

The conference met Saturday and issued a statement saying it had determined there weren't enough members voting in favor of the proposal, which would require a change in church bylaws. The vote last week at the church, which has about 40 people who attend, was 9-6.

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iraq's prime minister said Saturday that a bombing earlier this week inside Baghdad's Green Zone was an assassination attempt against him, but he defended the nation's armed forces and said the breach did not signal a deterioration in security.

During an interview with The Associated Press, Nouri al-Maliki said the building housing the legislature or the parliament speaker also could have been targets but that preliminary information suggested the bombers were trying to get him.

"The preliminary intelligence information says that the car was due to enter parliament and stay there and not to explode. It was supposed to explode on the day I entered parliament," said al-Maliki, who was not in or near the parliament building when the bomb actually went off.

Monday's blast inside the central Baghdad zone, which is supposed to be one of Iraq's most secure areas, has raised new concerns about whether Iraqi forces are able to protect the country when the U.S. military leaves by the end of the year.

At the time of the explosion, officials said they did not know if it was the result of rocket or mortar fire into the Green Zone or a bomb, and it was unclear if anyone was being targeted specifically.

The Baghdad military spokesman, Qassim al-Moussawi, said late Friday that al-Maliki was the target. He said the driver of the vehicle tried to join a convoy of other vehicles going into the parliament grounds but was turned back by officials at the checkpoint because he didn't have proper identification. The driver then drove to the parking lot just opposite the parliament entrance, and the vehicle exploded seconds later.

Al-Maliki said the bomb had likely been assembled inside the Green Zone and was not very powerful.

A body was found near the wrecked car, but authorities were still trying to determine the person's identity and whether he was the bomber or a bystander, officials have said. Two other people were wounded.

Al-Maliki played down any suggestion that the attack, in an area that is also home to the U.S. Embassy as well as many Iraqi government institutions, demonstrated any weakness in security ahead of the U.S. military withdrawal. All American forces are to be out of the country by the end of this month.

"I don't think that this says something about the security situation in the country. Such breaches can happen in any country or anywhere," the prime minister said.

"It was a very simple operation," he said. "I cannot see in this operation any indication of a security deterioration in Iraq."

He blamed al-Qaida in Iraq and Saddam Hussein's Baath Party for the violence.

"They are opposing me, the parliament speaker and the parliament and the whole political process, so whomever the victim of their operation will be, it is a victory for them," he said.

The prime minister said he had previously shared information with the parliament speaker, Osama al-Nujaifi, that there might be an attempt to kill one of them at the parliament and that he advised the parliament speaker to exercise caution.

Al-Maliki said Iraqi security forces were still looking for at least four people believed to have played a role in the plot.

Meanwhile, rioters attacked dozens of liquor stores, a massage parlor and hotels after being stirred up by fiery sermons in a predominantly Kurdish city in north Iraq, police officials said Saturday.

The Kurdish-ruled north was spared much of the violence that engulfed the rest of the country from 2003 to 2008, but there have been several outbreaks of unrest against the rule of the two main secular-leaning parties.

The region also is home to a range of Islamist groups, including organizations involved in mainstream politics as well as smaller, more radical networks.

Friday's rampage began after midday prayers in the town of Zakho, some 300 miles (475 kilometers) northwest of Baghdad. Thirty people were injured, according to hospital official Imad Barwari.

The police officials spoke on condition of anonymity, as they were not authorized to speak to the media.

In retaliation for the initial rioting, angry crowds then attacked offices belonging to a Kurdistan-based Islamist party, officials said.

Police on Saturday also arrested a leader of Kurdistan's largest Islamist opposition party, which has denied any connection to the attacks.

Qustodio

Custodio means watch over or guard in Latin. Ancient Roman parents surely guarded their precious children from slave uprisings, volcanoes, and other dangers of the day. Qustodio (free, direct) extends protection into the decidedly non-Roman realm of the Internet. It's not as feature-rich as some parental control tools, but it has some unusual abilities, and it's free.

Getting Started
Like Norton Online Family Premier ($49.99 direct, 4 stars), Qustodio keeps all of its configuration and monitoring activity online, with a small client program that enforces the rules installed on each protected computer. To start using the product you first define a free online account.

During installation, you specify the number of child accounts to create (up to eight) and name the children. For each child you indicate the gender and birthdate and also select from a small set of avatar icons. You also name the computer and match each child account with the corresponding Windows account on this computer.

That last step is important, because Qustodio works across all your computers. After the initial installation, to install on another computer you just give it a name and match the kids to their user accounts.

Online Dashboard
You can log in to the Qustodio portal From any Internet-capable computer. Here you can add or remove children or modify profile settings. You can also change the names of your computers, or hide Qustodio's tray icon. Another tab enables daily or weekly email summary reports. Those are the overall account settings. Most parents probably spend more time configuring the product's protection settings for each child.

Qustodio can block access to Web sites matching 29 categories, but unlike most parental control products it doesn't use a database of known websites. Instead, it analyzes each page and categorizes it on the spot. That means that it can block a brand new porn page the minute it appears. Net Nanny 6.5 ($39.99 direct, 4.5 stars), Bsecure Online v6.16 ($49.95 direct for three licenses, 4.5 stars), and AVG Family Safety ($19.95 direct for three licenses, 4.5 stars) use real-time analysis too, but only on sites not already categorized.

The categories seem to be arranged roughly in order from safest to most dangerous. Pornography, gambling, violence, and such?all blocked by default?appear at the end. Educational, news, entertainment, health, and other safe categories appear at the beginning of the list. In between are categories like social networking, file sharing, and chat, categories that some parents might want to block. Parents also have the option to set any category for monitoring. In this mode Qustodio simply sends an email alert when the child visits a site matching the category.

Many parental control systems offer to block uncategorized sites. For those relying on a database of known sites, an uncategorized site is simply one they haven't gotten around to analyzing. Blocking uncategorized sites would effectively block all brand-new sites. A site not categorized by Qustodio, on the other hand, is typically one that doesn't have enough text for analysis. Chances are good such a site is actively avoiding categorization, so I'd advise turning on the option to block uncategorized sites.

One way to keep kids away from naughty websites is to make finding them difficult. Qustodio can force Safe Search in Google, Yahoo, and Bing, automatically stripping out inappropriate search terms and search results.

Stanley Weiss: Huntsman Is the Only Electable Republican

WASHINGTON -- Watching the Republican primary race is a lot like being at a carnival. There's the roller coaster of polling numbers, the kind that has Herman Cain surging to the top one week, then collapsing as Newt Gingrich rises. Then there's the candidates themselves, who sometimes seem more like sideshow acts -- each trying to top the next with a more outrageous statement -- than actual contenders to be the next president of the United States.

I'm not sure which statement stands out the most -- Michele Bachmann's assertion that the American Civil Liberties Union runs the Central Intelligence Agency; Cain trying to name the president of "Ubeki-beki-beki-beki-stan-stan"; Gingrich claiming that a luxury cruise around the Aegean gave him experience to deal with Greece's foreign debt crisis; Rick Santorum stating that he wants to go to war with China; or Mitt Romney asserting that if Barack Obama is re-elected, "Iran will have a nuclear weapon," but if Romney is elected, "They will not have a nuclear weapon." My favorite is Bachmann (again) telling an Iowa crowd that if she is elected, she will close the U.S. Embassy in Tehran. Only one problem: the U.S. hasn't had an embassy in Iran since 1980, when 52 Americans were held hostage for 444 days -- something you would expect Bachmann, a member of the House Select Committee on Intelligence, to know.

This spectacle has not gone unnoticed by Republican primary voters. Yet many continue to entertain the Gingriches of the race out of a refusal to believe that someone like Romney could really be their only option, even as others seem convinced that Romney's electability in a general election should earn him the nomination.

I tend to side with those who argue that someone who seems devoid of core principles isn't electable, particularly after viewing a devastating video released this week of his many flip-flops. Lest we forget, it was Mitt Romney who published an op-ed in the New Hampshire Union Leader suggesting the Obama Recovery Act was the largest expenditure ever during peacetime. I know of no definition of "peacetime" that involves fighting two wars at once. It was also Romney, just a few weeks ago, who called for privatizing veteran care, then reneged days later.

When you also consider Romney's close connections to Wall Street at a time when left and right alike are ready to storm the castle, it becomes difficult, if not impossible, to imagine Romney winning states like Michigan. Ohio might have been feasible had he not full-throatedly flip-flopped to support the anti-collective bargaining referendum, which Ohio voters rejected by a nearly two-to-one margin. And with Romney suggesting we let the housing market hit bottom as a solution to the housing crisis, it's hard to imagine victory in places like Nevada, where more than 1 in 10 families with children have lost their homes.

That leaves the Republican Party in a quandary. If Romney isn't actually electable, who is? Gingrich may be attractive to Republican primary voters, but with his own flip-flops, off-putting marital history, and decades' worth of outrageous statements, he may be the least electable Republican in a general election since Barry Goldwater. While occasionally brilliant, it's hard to imagine America electing a man whose most pronounced character trait is bullying. Given how Bill Clinton played him during the 1995 government shutdown, it's scary to think what the Chinese might do with him.

So, what's the answer? I believe it is staring Republicans in the face: Jon Huntsman. He's not just the most experienced candidate -- he's also the most electable Republican.

Huntsman has been dismissed from the start -- largely because he worked for "the enemy," as Obama's first ambassador to China. Yet Huntsman is no less a conservative than Mitt Romney. He is pro-life, pro-business, and deeply religious; he even favors Congressman Paul Ryan's budget plan. He still holds that global warming is real, a position Romney has retracted.

Unlike Romney, however, Huntsman has the chops to be president. An ambassador three times over, a wildly popular two-time governor who cut taxes while creating jobs, and a global businessman, Huntsman is the only one standing who can negotiate with the Chinese. As Joe Klein recently observed, his ideas are resolutely conservative, and his economic vision "is the closest any candidate has come to diagnosing the real problems at the heart of the Great Recession -- and proposing a reasonable path forward."

He is the kind of candidate independent voters fawn over. His quirks -- he rides Harleys, played in a rock band, speaks Mandarin, and dropped out of high school before earning his general equivalency degree -- helped him get re-elected governor in Utah in 2008 with a 58-point margin of victory, even as Republicans fell around him. Were he to win the nomination, he would be difficult for the president to attack. After all, if President Obama thought Huntsman unqualified, would he really have appointed him to the most important ambassadorship in the world?

Given his strengths, there's no question that Huntsman could be the 45th president; and that's not something lost on the president's campaign team. In 2009, David Plouffe, Obama's 2008 campaign manager and current senior adviser, worried publicly about facing Huntsman in 2012. His appointment to the ambassadorship was a pre-emptive parry.

Of course, winning the general election and winning the Republican nomination are different things. Huntsman is the only candidate onstage for whom the latter poses a substantially stiffer challenge than the former. Yet even considering the low polling numbers he currently shows, don't rule Huntsman out.

This same time last election, John McCain was trailing badly in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina. He even took out a personal loan just to keep his campaign afloat. And yet, when Mitt Romney lost the Iowa caucus to a candidate who wasn't really a national contender, the opening for McCain became clear, he won New Hampshire, and eventually the nomination.

It is not hard to imagine the same Mitt Romney losing to the same kind of far-right candidate in Iowa a month from now, giving Huntsman the window he'll need. It may not seem like it now: but my prediction is that Romney will lose in Iowa, Huntsman will win in New Hampshire and eventually be the Republican nominee for President.
