Reference and Education: Future Concepts ? Published: May 1, 2009

Producing Educated & Performing Individuals Experiential education (EE), unfortunately, is not the conventional K12 drill receiving place around the creation today. There are a number of reasons that minister to this set-back and this essay will not casing them. Instead, we?ll concentration on the characteristics of experiential education and its benefits. EE has been around for centuries and newly there appears to be a resurgence of it due to the insufficient dash opening of normal drill methods. EE is a true deliver draw close to learning and is easy to implement; it may be used in any theme area at any rank level.

A Guide to Living with Pets in Small Spaces | Vet Depot Blog

Living with pets in small spacesLiving in an apartment, town home, or small house with no yard does not mean you can?t properly care for a dog or cat. Even large animals can adapt to small spaces, and cats and dogs can get plenty of exercise in urban areas. It might take a little more effort on your part, though, if there?s no yard for romping and roaming.

Before you adopt a pet for your small space, research the exercise requirements for that particular breed. This is especially important if you plan to adopt a dog. Some breeds do require a yard for regular exercise, and daily trips outside on a leash won?t be enough to satisfy these pets.

Dog Parks and Runs

Most cities have one or more dog parks or dog runs designed to keep animals safe and confined while they get exercise. Check your local phone book or ask your veterinarian for dog parks near you. Remember to check out the rules of every dog park you visit; some parks may not allow all breeds, while many have strict policies prohibiting sick dogs, aggressive dogs, and dogs in heat.

Take Your Dog for a Walk

Take your dog for one or two good walks every day, even if he has a place near your home to do his business. Walking is good exercise and stimulation for your pooch. If you work long hours or are unable to take your dog for frequent walks for another reason, consider hiring a dog-walker to come by once or twice a day.

Schedule Play Dates or Consider Doggie Daycare

Dogs benefit from social interaction as well as physical activity. If a friend or neighbor has a dog that gets along with your pooch, schedule a few dates each month for them to get together and play. Activities such as tug of war require little space, are very physically challenging, and are most fun when played with a friend. Another option it to find a doggie daycare in your area that allows free play with other animals. Call around until you find one you like, but remember to check it out thoroughly before trusting the facility with your pet.

What about Cats?

Cats are easier to entertain at home and require considerably less space than dogs. Cats living in small spaces will benefit most from interactive cat?toys, such as dangling feathers and motion-activated mice. Treat balls are great because they stimulate your cat mentally and physically. Make sure you also provide scratching posts, climbing trees, and towers for your cat to perch on.

NHL and players' union reps meet again for second consecutive day

The Associated Press
Published Saturday, Sep. 29, 2012 9:30AM EDT
Last Updated Saturday, Sep. 29, 2012 12:16PM EDT

NEW YORK -- Progress was finally made during negotiations between the NHL and the players' association, but neither side came close to celebrating.

With core economic issues far away from the bargaining table on Friday, the league and union got back to talking in a pair of sessions that totalled about five hours and included a private meeting between Commissioner Gary Bettman and NHLPA Executive Director Donald Fehr.

Secondary issues were discussed, and some agreements were made, but none regarding the most contentious of topics that have left NHL players still locked out two weeks before the regular season is supposed to begin.

"I wish we had spent today on what we consider to be the more meaningful issues, but it is what it is," NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said. "We really need to hear from the players' association on those. We need some kind of sign that they are prepared to compromise their economic position because we haven't had that since Aug. 14.

"We'll see if we get there."

At least they got back to talking -- which hadn't happened since a few days before the NHL locked out its players on Sept. 16.

"It was a good day," Daly said. "We went through a lot of the areas we'd covered over the summer. We started closing off some agreements in some areas, and some continued areas of disagreements in others. It's part of the process."

All of the issues, big and small, must be ironed out before hockey can get out of the board room and back on the ice. So while the divisive topics still need to be tackled, the smaller ones have to be worked on, too.

That was the goal on Friday, and will continue to be on Saturday and Sunday when talks continue at the league's New York office.

"I don't want to use the adjective optimistic, but it was a productive discussion," NHL Players' Association special counsel Steve Fehr said. "We had a good session, and hopefully it will continue and build momentum."

A handful of players also took part in Friday's talks.

The groups agreed on issues related to player safety and drug testing, areas that weren't expected to be contentious. When they get back together over the weekend, they still aren't expected to dive into the splitting up of hockey-related revenue.

Players received 57 per cent of the net hockey-related revenues in the previous collective bargaining agreement, and owners want to bring that number down under 50 per cent.

The sides aren't moving closer to a compromise while they talk about other issues.

And that is where the frustration lies. The NHL is waiting for the players' association to make a counterproposal to one the league made in the previous bargaining session more than two weeks ago.

"We can't make them talk about what they don't want to talk about," Daly said. "In fairness, we do have to cover these issues if we're going to reach an agreement. What we're doing today is important, it's just not the most important things we can be doing.

"We've made at least two consecutive moves in significant dollars in their direction, and they haven't moved a single dollar in our direction since Aug. 4."

Former player Mathieu Schneider, now an NHLPA special assistant to the executive director, said Friday morning that there were agreements on more rigorous drug testing, expanding it to parts of the year during which testing is not currently done.

Neither side sees the use of performance-enhancing drugs as a problem in the NHL.

"We're in agreement that it's not an issue in our sport," Schneider said. "I think it's in the players' best interest as well as the sport to close off any possible time during the year where players could use."

It is not impossible that monetary issues will come up for discussion in this round of talks, they just aren't scheduled. Neither side has indicated it is prepared to make a new offer now regarding how to split up the more than $3 billion annual pot of hockey-related revenue.

"In general, when you're dealing with collective bargaining, when you start to have agreements on smaller issues, it can lead to bigger issues," Schneider said, "but it's still too early to say."

These are the first talks since the lockout was put in place on Sept. 16 and they came a day after the league cancelled the remaining preseason games. The regular season is to start Oct. 11.

If a deal isn't reached soon, regular-season games will be in danger of being lost. The NHL cancelled the entire 2004-05 season because of a lockout that eventually led to the collective bargaining agreement that expired this month.

"The calendar continues to tick along," Daly said. "My guess is as time goes on, regular-season games are at risk. I don't think it can be any more urgent than where we are now. We've had that level of urgency for a long time. In some respects you can meet all you want, but if there is no compromise or no movement or no new proposals I am not sure at the end of the day what you're meeting over.

"There is a very high degree of urgency certainly on our side. I can't speak for their side, but I am sure they would tell you there is a degree of urgency there, too."

Steve Fehr contended that the players' association is willing to discuss any issues at any time to try to make a deal soon.

"We can discuss the core issues whenever they want to do it," he said. "Bargaining is not ping pong. There are no rules on who has to serve."

What Apple Stock Teachs Us About Investing And Wall Street

Apple is a great company and if you've owned stock for any reasonable amount of time, you are a happy investor. ?We can learn a lot about investing looking at Apple. ?We can learn plenty about Wall Street at the same time.

Apple was just about $100 in 2009 and has been $700 recently. ?Wow. ?Nice win. ?Pretty much every mutual fund owns it and certainly most every hedge fund has owned it at some time and if it continues higher, they will all own it at the end of the year to make themselves look good on paper.

Lesson One - good stocks continue to go higher, looking at a chart, its pretty much a 45' angle with some pullbacks.

Lesson Two - even super great well performing stocks have significant pullbacks which is usually when supposed long term investors sell (and later wish they hadn't).

Lesson Three - eventually all growth companies and their stocks become too large to grow at the fantastic levels of the recent past and level out, Intel is a wonderful example, Microsoft too.

Lesson Four - you probably don't own it because if you did, your stockbroker or financial advisor probably sold it just as quickly because of commissions.

Lesson Five - Wall Street will get it wrong again. ?Over forty brokerage firms cover Apple and only one has a hold rating, no sells and plenty of buys and strong buys. ?REALLY? ?It is?reminiscent?of the tech bubble when almost no analysts would dare tell investors to sell anything.

Union ends strike at Husky's Ohio oil refinery

HOUSTON (Reuters) - Members of United Steelworkers union (USW) Local 624 ended a four-month strike at Husky Energy Inc.'s 155,000 barrel per day (bpd) Lima, Ohio refinery late on Thursday night, just hours after the company began a search for replacement workers.

The refinery has continued to operate without interruption during the strike.

"Effective immediately, the Steelworkers International Union and its affiliated local union 624 hereby end their strike and, as the exclusive bargaining representative of all bargaining unit members, make an unconditional offer to return to work immediately on behalf of all bargaining unit members who have not already returned to work," the union said in a statement.

A Husky representative was not immediately available to discuss union's offer.

The Lima News said on Thursday that the company had begun a search for temporary workers at the refinery, who would be offered permanent employment as soon as the National Labor Relations Board rules on charges brought by the union against Husky.

Striking workers had voted on Sunday to reject the company's latest contract offer and on Monday management declared an impasse in negotiations, a necessary step before the company could impose a unilateral settlement.

The 230 USW workers began the strike on May 25, alleging that Husky management had failed to negotiate in good faith for a contract to replace the one that expired on April 14.

Outdoor String Lights To Obtain The Great Exteriors - Express Yourself

There are three questions you should ask when it comes to searching for high-quality outdoor string lighting. Those three sought after questions should be about the style of light bulb, positioning of the lights, and the style of theme suitable. Keep in mind, questioning the suitable questions will definitely support you in any given condition. And that is a fact even if that circumstance includes searching for open-air string lighting.

What Type of Bulb Should I Use?

There are two types of bulbs. There are the LED types and the incandescent light bulbs. What you desire would depend wholly on your taste. When it comes to the number of colors available and brightness of the bulb, then you should go with an incandescent. There are LEDs with protected bulb to add some assortment to its range of colors, but this often leads to dull brightness. Next, would be the improvement in power utilization. For those who already have their eyes on LED exterior string lighting then you?re in benefits since LED lights use a lesser amount of electricity than that of an incandescent. It is mentioned that LEDs consume around 90 percent far less power as compared to incandescent bulbs. On the other hand, incandescent light does consume more electricity but it helps you save more money in advance. Another significant difference that?s worth mentioning is the resistance of the bulbs. LEDs are much required when preferring durability.

Where Should I Set My Outdoor String Lighting?

The best method to make use of out-of-doors string lights is to use it in a way that it is not only there for aesthetics benefit, but to also use it with its beneficial reason. What I mean by this is to search for strategic spots that can also help you in variety of ways than one. For instance, you can place some lights beside the walkway so that people can easily see the path to your home clearly at dark hours. Another illustration would be to put outdoor string lighting on your backyard where it not simply illuminates the location but also works as light to avoid possible criminals. Workout a scheme, amaze the neighbors with your resourcefulness.

What would be the Good Design?

The solution to this concern really will depend on your choice actually. There is no precise solution to this, but there are definite guidelines you can comply with to make your lighting appear excellent. The principle when it comes to open-air string lights is to never utilize excessive string lights. The string lights are designed to serve as the accent which give emphasis to the structure and style of the site around it. If you wanted to fully light up the location then you should have purchased any of the building lamp. Joking aside, the appeal of the string light come from the subtle and diffused lighting it adds to the environment.

To sum it up, continue to consider the three questions when selecting open-air string lights to guide you in making your choice. And when it comes to posting your lights, always be certain that that it?s not numerous or excessively few.

See down below to find out more with where you should choose the most complete list regarding BROUGHT lights while using finest cost:

Eco-friendly Supply is an online shop which has a difference. Simply good for the environment tools are sold right here. The theory would be to slow up the utilization of poisonous chemicals and as well lessen waste material.

Romania Hopes to Lure More Health Tourists :: Balkan Insight

As Romania seek to boost numbers of foreign visitors, the country's medical services are being increasingly touted as an area deserving expansion on the grounds of quality and low prices.

"Health tourism has great potential and the development of the medical tourist infrastructure and its promotion at home and abroad should be stimulated,? the Tourism Minister, Eduard Hellvig, said on Tuesday.

Although medical tourism in Romania is still in its infancy, the industry is certainly making strides.

According to official data, around 3 per cent of the visitors to Romania last year - some 70,000 people - came for medical services, which was double the figure in 2009. They spent some 250 million euro in the country.

Most foreign patients still come for traditional spa therapies, for which Romania has a good reputation, but a growing number now want dental services and aesthetic and anti-aging therapies.

Radulescu noted that prior to the fall of the communist regime in 1989 over 300,000 foreign tourists visited Romanian spas each year.

That number is lower today, largely due to a drop in advertising and a perceived decline in the standards of some of the services and products.

But while spas languish, Romania?s popularity is on the rise for plastic surgery and dentistry, as the country gains a reputation for competitive prices.

Dentistry is a real growth area. A ceramic crown in Romania costs 90 euro and a filling between 15 euro and 25 euro.

More complex oral procedures, such as tooth extraction, cost between 50 euro and 120 euro. Teeth whitening costs from 150 euro to 270 euro.

Those prices compare very favourably with the prices in most parts of Western Europe or the US, which explains the boom.

The rise in medical tourism has worked to the advantage of private operators who have started to open more clinics and hospitals to cover gaps in the market.

Romania is not the only beneficiary of this trend in the region. Serbia and Hungary have also made names for themselves as popular medical tourist destinations.

Austrians in particular have been crossing the border and taking advantage of the cheaper medical services on offer in neighbouring countries for years.

World's largest oil trader flouts Iran sanctions

Denis Balibouse / Reuters

A sign is pictured in front of Vitol Group trading commodities company building in Geneva in this October 4, 2011 file photo.

By Luke Pachymuthu, Randy Fabi and Chen Aizhu, Reuters

SINGAPORE/BEIJING?- Vitol, the world's largest oil trader, is buying and selling Iranian fuel oil, undermining Western efforts to choke the flow of petrodollars to Tehran and put pressure on Iran's suspected nuclear weapons program.

Vitol last month bought 2 million barrels of fuel oil, used for power generation, from Iran and offered it to Chinese traders, Reuters established in interviews with 10 oil trading, industry and shipping sources in Southeast Asia, China and the Middle East. A spokesman for Vitol declined to comment.

Swiss-based Vitol is not obliged to comply with a ban imposed in July by the European Union on trading oil with Iran because Switzerland decided not to match EU and U.S. sanctions against Tehran.

The company earlier in the year stopped trading Iranian crude oil from its main European offices before the July 1 EU embargo deadline. But the trading sources said it has continued to deal in Iranian fuel oil from the Middle East.

The tale of the cargo of Iranian fuel oil involves tanker tracking systems being switched off, two ship-to-ship transfers, and blending of the oil with fuel from another source to alter the cargo's physical specification.

Privately-held Vitol SA is led by its long-time CEO Ian Taylor, a Briton. Taylor was among leading donors to Britain's ruling Conservative Party named in March by the Prime Minister's office as having dined with David Cameron at his private apartment in Downing Street amid the fall-out from a "cash for access" party funding scandal. Britain is a vociferous critic of Tehran's nuclear program and a leading advocate of the EU sanctions.

Swiss loophole
Vitol has said previously it is in compliance with sanctions against Iran, but has declined to say whether or not it would follow the strict EU regulations rather than Switzerland's.

Rival Swiss-based traders Glencore and Trafigura said in July they had halted all Iranian oil trade, even though the Swiss government opted against following measures imposed by Washington and Brussels.

The measures have halved OPEC member Iran's crude oil export revenues, devaluing the rial currency and bringing financial hardship to millions of Iranians.

On top of the EU ban, Iran's four biggest oil buyers - China, India, Japan and South Korea - have reduced their imports by at least a fifth to secure exemptions from the threat of U.S. financial sanctions on their companies.

Vitol last year earned record revenue of $297 billion, a near-five-fold increase since 2004. It does not reveal profits.

Fuel oil is a small part of its trading portfolio, accounting for $24 billion of revenue last year compared to $105 billion from crude and $100 billion from other refined products.

Profit margins on oil trade are typically very low, but traders said Iran's difficulties in finding buyers because of sanctions are likely to have made for a fat profit margin for trading its fuel oil.

Ship-to-ship
Vitol acquired the Iranian fuel oil early this month in a ship-to-ship transfer off Malaysia from a National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC) vessel, the Leadership, onto a Vitol-chartered tanker, the Ticen Ocean.

The Ticen Ocean was sub-contracted by Vitol for floating storage off the Malaysian port of Tanjung Pelepas from Titan Petrochemicals, a Hong Kong company which itself hired it from shipowner Frontline of Norway.

Frontline said Titan had told it the ship was not used to store Iranian oil. "Our only counterpart in this matter is Titan and they have said it is not correct that there has been Iranian oil on the boat," said Frontline CEO Jens Martin Jensen.

Titan did not return calls or emails seeking comment.

The Leadership left Iran's main oil export terminal at Kharg Island during the week of August 23, passing through the Strait of Malacca before disappearing from freight tracking systems off the Malaysian coast on September 4. Since sanctions were imposed, Iranian vessels have frequently switched off the onboard 'black-box' transponders used in the shipping industry to monitor vessel movements.

Industry sources in Tanjung Pelepas who monitor shipping transfer operations in Malaysian waters said Vitol later brought alongside another tanker, the Speranza, to replace the Ticen Ocean as floating storage. The Speranza, owned by China's Sino Shipping Holdings, arrived at Tanjung Pelepas on September 13-14, Reuters data shows.

Vitol also transferred some of its fuel oil from the Ticen Ocean between September 11-12 to another vessel, the Kamari I, according to Reuters data. That cargo was delivered to Vitol's storage terminal on the Malaysian island of Tanjung Bin, inside Tanjung Pelepas port, one trading source said.

'Special blend'
Traders said the company then blended the oil in storage with fuel oil sourced from Europe, calling it a "special blend" and offered it to Chinese traders. Reuters was given a copy of the specifications of the cargo on offer.

Vitol first asked a $30 premium to Singapore's benchmark 180-centistoke fuel oil price, said a Chinese industry executive who manages some of China's many small, independent refineries, known as teapots. That would have valued the 2-million-barrel cargo at about $250 million.

"Because the offer was too high, our people didn't really carry on the talks," the Chinese executive said. "Vitol also appeared not in a hurry to sell, so was not being aggressive."

Two Asian refinery buyers who were then offered the oil said the asking price was cut to a $12-$14 premium to Singapore benchmark prices, or around $175 million in total.

"Vitol is offering the cargo as a special blend to teapot refiners in Shandong," said a China-based trader. "No one's agreed to buy the Vitol cargo. I declined because I wasn't sure of the quality and specifications."

At the time of publication it is not known whether Vitol had agreed a deal to sell the oil.

Insurance
Vitol's use of the Ticen Ocean to store Iranian oil could put the tanker's insurance at risk. The vessel is insured by the North of England P&I Association.

The EU's oil embargo bans EU insurers who underwrite around 90 percent of the world's tanker fleet from providing cover for ships carrying Iranian oil.

Mike Salthouse, director of North Insurance Management, which acts as manager for the North of England P&I Association, said it would not provide cover for tankers storing or transporting Iranian oil.

"We would not expect to continue to insure any fleet actively engaged in this trade," he said, but declined comment specifically on the Ticen Ocean.

Human brains develop wiring slowly, differing from chimpanzees

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? Research comparing brain development in humans and our closest nonhuman primate relatives, chimpanzees, reveals how quickly myelin in the cerebral cortex grows, shedding light on the evolution of human cognitive development and the vulnerability of humans to psychiatric disorders. Myelin is the fatty insulation surrounding axon connections of the brain.

Recent research by Chet Sherwood, associate professor of anthropology in Columbian College of Arts and Sciences, along with Daniel Miller, a former GW graduate student, and other colleagues, reveals this key difference in brain development between human and chimpanzee. The findings were recently published in the September 24th edition Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

In the article, Dr. Sherwood and co-authors write that the development of myelin from birth to adulthood in humans is protracted in comparison to chimpanzees. In humans, myelin develops slowly during childhood, followed by a delayed period of maturity beyond adolescence and into early adulthood. In contrast, in chimpanzees, the development of myelin already starts at a relatively more mature level at birth and ceases development long before puberty.

?These observations indicate that a marked delay in the development schedule of the human neocortex may play an important role in the growth of connections that contribute to our species-specific cognitive abilities,? wrote Dr. Sherwood and co-authors.

The developmental timing of myelination is important because it establishes connectivity among parts of the growing brain, which is essential to higher-order cognitive functions, such as decision-making and emotional regulation. These cognitive functions are known to mature relatively late in humans, after the time of adolescence. Also, this period of persistent myelin development during early adulthood in humans is a time of particular vulnerability to neuropsychiatric diseases, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression.

HP LaserJet Enterprise 500 Color MFP M575dn

There's a lot to like about the HP LaserJet Enterprise 500 Color MFP M575dn, including its blazing speed; its excellent graphics quality its ability to print from and scan to multiple destinations; and a ginormous color touch screen for controlling its various functions. Set against those pluses, though, are slightly sub-par text and photo quality, a relatively meager paper capacity, the lack of standard fax capabilities, and a hefty price tag. Still, it's well worth a close look by workgroups and small businesses looking for a workhorse laser multifunction printer (MFP) able to print good-quality color graphics.

You'll probably want three people to move this goliath into place, as the M575dn?which measures 23 by 26.1 by 21.8 inches (HWD)?tips the scale at 102 pounds. The M575dn can print, copy, and scan, but not fax. An optional fax card is available for $299 direct, or you could buy the M575f, which adds both fax capabilities and a built-in stapler, for $2,699. the M575dn can print from and scan to a USB thumb drive, scan to email, save to a network folder, or send to an FTP server. Its 8-inch color touch screen lets you control these and other functions, including secure, password-protected printing. (It has a built-in 250GB secure hard drive.) Among the options is a "placeholder" icon for the fax, in case you spring for the option.?

On top of the printer is a 50-sheet reversing automatic document feeder (RADF), capable of scanning or copying both sides of two-sided, multipage documents. The M575DN has a standard paper capacity of 350 sheets, split between a 250-feet main tray and a 100-sheet multipurpose tray, and has an automatic duplexer for printing on both sides of a sheet of paper. With an optional 500-sheet tray ($319 direct), the maximum paper capacity is 850 sheets. That's still less than even the standard 900-sheet paper capacity of the Editors' Choice Lexmark X548dte, which has a maximum paper capacity of 1,450 sheets. The HP's maximum monthly duty cycle is up to 75,000 pages; the X548dte's is 85,000.

The M575DN can connect to a network via Ethernet (including Gigabit Ethernet) or to a computer via USB; optional Wi-Fi is available.

HP LaserJet Enterprise 500 Color MFP M575dn

Printing Speed
I timed the M575dn on our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing), at an effective 8.5 pages per minute (ppm). That's very fast for a color laser MFP, and a good speed considering its 31-page per minute rated speed for both color and monochrome that's based on printing text documents without graphics or photos?our test suite includes text pages, graphics pages, and pages with mixed content. It's even faster than the Lexmark X548dte, with a tested speed of 7.0 ppm and a modest 25 page-per-minute rated speed for both color and monochrome, as well as the OKI MC561, which tested at 7.2 ppm and has a rated speed of 31 ppm for monochrome printing and 27 ppm for color printing. The HP LaserJet Pro 400 Color MFP M475dn, geared to smaller offices than the M575dn, limped in at a mere 3.2 ppm.

Output Quality
Text quality was slightly sub-par for a laser, which is still fine for typical business uses, though I'd draw the line at desktop publishing or marketing materials that require smaller fonts. Graphics quality was above par, good enough for printing out marketing materials. The only flaw worth mention was that some black backgrounds appeared slightly faded. Photo quality was slightly subpar for a color laser. Prints tended to be a little on the dark side, and there was some loss in detail in both dark and light areas. Other issues included dithering (graininess), and posterization (abrupt changes in shading where they should be gradual).

There's a lot to like about the HP LaserJet Enterprise 500 Color MFP M575dn, and it's worth consideration by a small to mid-sized business looking for a workhorse color laser. Like the Editors' Choice Lexmark X548dte, it prints high-quality graphics and has a large color touch screen and a built-in hard drive. It's even faster than the impressively swift Lexmark, and supports HP's ePrint functionality. But the HP lacks the X548dte's fax capabilities, stumbles a bit on text and photo quality, and has much smaller standard and optional paper capacity, yet sells for considerably more.

MUNSTER: About That Prediction Of 8 Million ... - Business Insider

Apple's stock is down 1% this morning after it announced 5 million in iPhone 5 sales over its opening weekend.

One of the reasons Apple's 5 million in sales is driving the stock down is that it's below the expectations of analysts like Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster. Munster was calling for 6-10 million in opening weekend sales.

How did he get it wrong? Here's his explanation:

We believe there are two factors that negatively impacted the number. First, our sales expectation assumed that Apple would include all phones pre-ordered online. We believe that this may have been up to 1 million additional units as units pre-ordered after the middle of the first day were projected to be available in October. Second, we noted 1.25 days of Apple Retail inventory compared to 2.5 days during the 4S launch. Our 8 million estimate assumed full weekend availability and the counting of all online pre-orders. We believe that if supply were not a constraint and Apple included all pre-orders, the launch weekend number would have been closer to 7-8 million, assuming ~1 million October pre-order sales and an additional 1-2 million units at retail.

Rollout of new iPhone 5 redefines Apple success, Tim Cook-style

SAN FRANCISCO: Tim Cook is no Steve Jobs when it comes to leading Apple Inc. However, as the debut of the new iPhone 5 just proved, that may not be a bad thing. The taller, thinner and lighter phone prompted a rush on Wall Street to raise price targets for Apple stock, but the optimism was not because of a big technological advance or design breakthrough; the ?wow? factor that was the trademark of the late Apple co-founder Jobs was decidedly absent.

Rather, it was the speed of the global launch that astounded, validating the new CEO?s much-touted wizardry at the essential but unglamorous task of managing a supply chain.

?We are positively surprised regarding the pace of the rollout, since we had expected a bigger impact from component constraints,? Barclays analyst Ben Reitzes said.

By next Friday, the iPhone 5 will be in 31 countries, and will be in 100 by the end of the calendar year. That would be 30 more than the rollout of the predecessor phone, the 4S, over a similar period, Jeffries analyst Peter Misek calculated.

That means Apple has worked out supply constraints and inked deals now with 240 carriers. It will get enough phones out the door in the next 10 days to have a material effect on earnings.

?His skills fit the time period and the flow of product,? said Raymond Miles, professor emeritus at Haas School of Business, University of California, Berkeley, adding that Apple may be at a stage where it needs ?someone with a production vision.?

The iPhone launch offers some other, subtler indications of how Apple is changing under Cook. In public events, Jobs stood out in his black turtleneck, and performed carefully crafted one-man stage shows. At the press event for the iPhone 5, Cook blended into a pack of executives all sporting a uniform of jeans and untucked casual dress shirt.

Indeed, one might say that practical, low-flash, but high-impact actions are emerging as the Cook trademark. He has introduced a dividend to pay out part of the more than $100 billion cash stockpile, raised salaries for a rabidly loyal but low-paid workforce in the Apple stories, and sped up product rollouts.

Under Cook, more Wall Street analysts have been invited to headquarters to talk to executives, particularly chief financial officer Peter Oppenheimer and head of Internet services Eddy Cue. Cook himself addressed investors at a Goldman Sachs conference, a rarity for Apple executives, and initiated investigations into allegations of labor abuse in its supply chain.

Insiders say he is a refreshing presence after the prickly Jobs, who was admired but feared. Cook is also known for his ability to track vast amount of data and zero in on a critical parameter.

One person familiar with the CEO notes that under Cook, the company has continued to rapidly increase its revenue, retain all the senior executives, maintain its product rollout schedule and avoid huge blunders.

On the flip side, the imbroglio over the sub-par mapping software in the iPhone 5 suggests that Jobs? obsessive perfectionism and attention to user experience is already being missed.

Apple Maps, which offers soaring ?flyover? views of major cities, has displaced Google Maps on the new iPhone software. But the new program has no public transit directions, limited traffic information, and flat-out mistakes, such as putting one city in the middle of the ocean.

?Apple made this maps change despite its shortcomings because they put their own priorities for corporate strategy ahead of user experience,? said Anil Dash, a widely followed technology pundit, reflecting widespread annoyance and consternation.

Jobs would have put the whole company to work on the problem, as each negative review of the widely used feature would have irked him, said the person familiar with Apple?s inner workings. The issue facing Cook now is how fast he reacts to the Maps problem and how quickly it gets fixed, the person said.

Jobs himself allowed email synchronization software MobileMe to launch in 2008, to deadly reviews. Fortune magazine reported Jobs telling the entire development group, ?You should hate each other for having let each other down? and immediately replaced the group?s head.

?No CEO, not even Steve Jobs, would be able to catch all the problems in every new feature of a new complicated product, like the iPhone 5,? said Harvard Business School professor David Yoffie. ?The big question is how will Tim respond now??

More broadly, there is also the question of whether Apple under Cook can produce products that are revolutionary rather than evolutionary. His products thus far ? the iPhone, the new iPod line and an expected iPad mini ? represent improvements, rather than game changers.

In the meantime, Cook is topping Jobs? sales record: IPhone 5 preorders hit 2 million in 24 hours, twice the level of the 4S, and analysts expect a smaller iPad mini in October.

Investors do not seem to need much more convincing about Cook?s ability to captain the ship: The average price target for Apple stock is now $763, up 6 percent from a month ago, thanks to analysts raising targets in the wake of the ?wow-less? launch event.

Intelligent Decisions, Inc., to Showcase Revolutionary New Dismounted Soldier Training System at Modern Day Marine Expo

Cutting-Edge Training System Enables U.S. Soldiers to Train in a Virtual Environment, Allows for Complete Cross Pollination Based on Branch of Service, Type of Mission, and Operating Environment

Ashburn,VA (PRWEB) September 24, 2012

Intelligent Decisions (ID), Inc., a recognized leader in federal IT solutions, will showcase the company?s revolutionary new Dismounted Soldier Training System (DSTS) at the Modern Day Marine Exposition from September 25 to 27 at the Marine Corps Base (MCB) Quantico in Virginia. The cutting-edge system enables U.S. soldiers, leaders and units to train in a virtual environment, increases the quality of instruction and combat preparedness, and reduces traditional expenses associated with large-scale training facilities. ID is currently rolling out DSTS to 28 U.S. Army installations worldwide.

DSTS enables many different scenarios and environments to be built. So the training system allows for complete cross pollination based on the branch of service, type of mission, and operating environment ? further decreasing cost, development time, and expensive training environments.

?Modern Day Marine is known throughout the industry and armed forces as one of the premier military equipment, systems, services and technology expositions,? said ID President and CEO Harry Martin. ?For that reason, the event will provide us with an ideal opportunity to get feedback from warfighters on the Dismounted Soldier Training System, as well as to respond to their questions face-to-face.?

A significant amount of the equipment used by the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) and other U.S. and allied forces confronting enemies in Iraq, Afghanistan and around the world was first showcased at a Modern Day Marine Exposition. MCB Quantico VA, known as the ?Crossroads of the Marine Corps,? is home to the Combat Development Command and the Marine Corps Systems Command (MCSC), which serves as the Department of the Navy's systems command for Marine Corps ground weapon and information technology system programs in order to equip and sustain the USMC forces with full-spectrum, current and future expeditionary and crisis response capabilities.

MCSC conducts research, development and acquisition for the Marine Corps. In its role as an acquisition organization and a competency support organization, MCSC manages or supports over 35 defense acquisition programs.

ID spearheaded the development, and now the production, of the multi-million dollar DSTS. The company will also provide ongoing, onsite operations and maintenance of DSTS at all of the 28 U.S. Army installations. Management of DSTS is being led by the Army?s Program Executive Office for Simulation, Training and Instrumentation.

It is important to note that earlier this year the MCSC awarded ID a key Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) multi-award contract for the delivery of commercial-off-the-shelf computer systems to the Marine Corps as part of the Marine Corps Common Hardware Suite (MCHS). Specifically, the IDIQ contract is designed to deliver standardized computing equipment and worldwide integrated logistics support to the USMC and the Department of Navy for next generation enterprise network laptops and desktops. ID will feature some of the critical systems that are available on this contract at the Modern Day Marine Exposition.

This sounds really interesting, although it's a little bare bones (I fully trust you'll add more!) so I look forward to knowing more!

College Football's Coaches on the Hot Seat

[unable to retrieve full-text content]

Source: bleacherreport.com --- Sunday, September 23, 2012
Losses at home to Central Michigan and to intrastate rival Iowa State tend to land anyone on the hot seat, and Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz is no different. Ferentz's buyout may scare Iowa administrators from making a move, but at some point you have to bite the bullet and move on to the next step.? Joker Phillips didn't do himself any favors with a listless performance vs. Florida in The Swamp, where it appeared that his team quit on him. Who joins Ferentz and Phillips on this week's hot seat? SEC lead writer Barrett Sallee examines that in this edition of "The Program." Read more College Football news on BleacherReport.com ...
