Nearly All Students Now Use Web for Research, Study Says

When its report or research paper or poster board project time, nearly all ? 94 percent ? of students equate research with using Google or other search engines, according to teachers. This trend grew in leaps and bounds when Wikipedia and other online encyclopedias came about.

Teachers do worry students aren?t the finding the most accurate and/or trustworthy information due to ineffective research.

The data comes from a new study by the Per Research Center?s Internet & American Life Project in conjunction with the College Board and the National Writing Project. Nearly 5,200 middle and high school teachers took an online survey, saying online search is a mixed bag for students ? with pros and cons for the classroom and students.

Only 52 percent of teachers say their students have a good understanding of how search results are generated. And many are concerned about the accuracy and trustworthiness of content that ranks well in Google and other search engines.

For those who work in the search industry and have school-age children at home, these statistics may be of interest. It may now be necessary to teach children and teens how to effectively weigh information found online for accurateness and reliability. The next generation of navigators of search engines may end up much more savvy than their predecessors ? something for businesses to keep in mind as they create and publish content.
