HBT: Dodgers eyeing Lohse | M's ditch Figgins

Mark Saxon of ESPN Los Angeles reports that the Dodgers are interested in Kyle Lohse. Add this to their reported interest in?Zack Greinke and Anibal Sanchez. You have to figure, though, that all of the free agent pitchers are going to wait until after Greinke signs and sets the market.

If you?re the Dodgers, though, why not? I mentioned this to Gleeman a minute a go and his response was that with their payroll, the Dodgers should investigate a home rotation and a road rotation.

Anyway, Lohse is coming off his best season as a major leaguer ? he went 16-3 with a 2.86 ERA ? but he?s 34 and his strikeout rates suggest a pitcher who was above his head last year. ?I?d say buyer beware, but it?s the Dodgers and they?re richer than God so what do they care?

Nanobiotechnology: Versatile 3-D nanostructures using DNA 'bricks'

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? Researchers at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University have created more than 100 three-dimensional (3D) nanostructures using DNA building blocks that function like Lego? bricks -- a major advance from the two-dimensional (2D) structures the same team built a few months ago.

In effect, the advance means researchers just went from being able to build a flat wall of Legos?, to building a house. The new method, featured as a cover research article in the 30 November issue of Science, is the next step toward using DNA nanotechnologies for more sophisticated applications than ever possible before, such as "smart" medical devices that target drugs selectively to disease sites, programmable imaging probes, templates for precisely arranging inorganic materials in the manufacturing of next generation computer circuits, and more.

The nanofabrication technique, called "DNA-brick self-assembly," uses short, synthetic strands of DNA that work like interlocking Lego? bricks. It capitalizes on the ability to program DNA to form into predesigned shapes thanks to the underlying "recipe" of DNA base pairs: A (adenosine) only binds to T (thymine) and C (cytosine) only binds to G (guanine).

Earlier this year, the Wyss team reported in Nature how they could create a collection of 2D shapes by stacking one DNA brick (42 bases in length) upon another.

But there's a "twist" in the new method required to build in 3D.

The trick is to start with an even smaller DNA brick (32 bases in length), which changes the orientation of every matched-up pair of bricks to a 90 degree angle -- giving every two Legos? a 3D shape. In this way, the team can use these bricks to build "out" in addition to "up," and eventually form 3D structures, such as a 25-nanometer solid cube containing hundreds of bricks. The cube becomes a "master" DNA "molecular canvas"; in this case, the canvas was composed of 1000 so-called "voxels," which correspond to eight base-pairs and measure about 2.5 nanometers in size -- meaning this is architecture at its tiniest.

The master canvas is where the modularity comes in: by simply selecting subsets of specific DNA bricks from the large cubic structure, the team built 102 3D structures with sophisticated surface features, as well as intricate interior cavities and tunnels. "This is a simple, versatile and robust method," says Peng Yin, Ph.D., Wyss core faculty member and senior author on the study.

Another method used to build 3D structures, called DNA origami, is tougher to use to build complex shapes, Yin said, because it relies on a long "scaffold" strand of DNA that folds to interact with hundreds of shorter "staple" strands -- and each new shape requires a new scaffold routing strategy and hence new staples. In contrast, the DNA brick method does not use any scaffold strand and therefore has a modular architecture; each brick can be added or removed independently.

"We are moving at lightning speed in our ability to devise ever more powerful ways to use biocompatible DNA molecules as structural building blocks for nanotechnology, which could have great value for medicine as well as non-medical applications," says Wyss Institute Founding Director Don Ingber, M.D., Ph.D.

The research team led by Yin, who is also an assistant professor of systems biology at Harvard Medical School (HMS), included Wyss Postdoctoral Fellow Yonggang Ke, Ph.D., and Wyss Graduate Student Luvena Ong. Another contributor was Wyss Core Faculty member William Shih, Ph.D., who also holds appointments at HMS and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

The research was supported by the Office of Naval Research, the Army Research Office, the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University.

Germany: won't back Palestinian state at UN

BERLIN (AP) ? Germany says it won't back a Palestinian drive for statehood in a U.N. vote this week ? putting it at odds with France and other European countries.

Chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesman, Steffen Seibert, said Wednesday Berlin is still evaluating the situation and consulting with its European partners. But he said: "It is also very certain that Germany will not vote for such a resolution."

Officials left open whether Germany will vote against raising the Palestinians' status from a U.N. observer to a nonmember observer state when the U.N. General Assembly considers the issue on Thursday.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Andreas Peschke says Germany's priority is to avoid anything that could damage prospects of a negotiated two-state solution.

Germany last year voted against Palestinian membership of UNESCO, the U.N. cultural agency.

(AP Photo/Mustafa Karali, File)

(AP) ? Twin car bombs ripped through a Damascus suburb on Wednesday, killing at least 34 people and leaving dozens critically wounded, according to state media and hospital officials.

The state news agency, SANA, said two cars packed with explosives detonated early in the morning in the eastern Jaramana suburb, a district that is mostly loyal to President Bashar Assad. The area is populated mostly by Christians and Druse, a minority sect.

A series of blasts have struck regime targets in Damascus and elsewhere since last December, raising fears of a rising Islamic militant element among the forces seeking to topple Assad.

Wednesday's car bombs went off in a parking lot located between two commercial buildings. They were detonated within five minutes of one another as groups of laborers and employees were arriving to work.

The blasts shattered windows in nearby buildings, littering the street with glass and debris. Human remains were scattered on the pavement, amid pools of blood.

There were conflicting reports about the death toll, however.

Two hospital officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media, said at least 30 bodies were brought to two nearby hospitals. Activists with the Britain-based Observatory for Human Rights say 29 people were killed. The activist group relies on reports from the ground.

The different tolls could not immediately be reconciled. Syria restricts independent media coverage.

The conflict in Syria started 20 months ago as an uprising against Assad, whose family has ruled the country for four decades. The conflict quickly morphed into a civil war, with rebels taking up arms to fight back against a bloody crackdown by the government. According to activists, some 40,000 people have been killed since March 2011.

Assad blames the revolt on a conspiracy to destroy Syria, saying the uprising is being driven by foreign "terrorists" ? a term the authorities use for the rebels ? and not Syrians seeking change.

Analysts say most of those fighting Assad's regime are ordinary Syrians and soldiers who have defected, disenchanted with the authoritarian government. But increasingly, foreign fighters and those adhering to an extremist Islamist ideology are turning up on the front lines. The rebels try to play down the Islamists' influence for fear of alienating Western support.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Wednesday's bombings.

Rebels fighting to topple Assad are predominantly members of the Sunni Muslim majority. In their push to take Damascus, they have frequently targeted state institutions and troops around the country. They have also often hit districts around the capital with the country's minority communities, perceived to be allied with Assad's Alawite sect, an offshoot Shiite group that dominates the regime.

Downtown Damascus ? the seat of Assad's power ? has seen scores of car bombs and mortar attacks, targeting state security institutions and troops, as well as areas with homes of wealthy Syrians, army officers, security officials and other members of the regime.

Today: Using Social Media to Promote Science

Join me, Joanne Manaster, Melanie Tannenbaum and Prof. Bill Hammack today from 4-6pm at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign?Institute for Genomic Biology, room 612 (that?s the room right next to Array Cafe, in the Gatehouse).

The University of Illinois has a surprising number of academics who are successful science writers, bloggers, photographers and social media users (I know I?m going to forget a few, but others who come to mind are Christine Herman, Dan Simons, and Alex Wild). I suspect the proportion of online science outreach folks is quite high here, and we?re only starting to tap into our collective potential (Midwest Science Online, anyone?).

This afternoon?s talk should be a great introduction to the panelists, our perspectives, and the concept of online science outreach. For my part, I?ll likely discuss my own academic trajectory, how that led to blogging, my thoughts about the blogosphere versus academia, and the importance of historicizing and contextualizing science.

Perhaps you?ll get a few ideas about how to get started, or to take your own work in a new direction. Join us!

Kuwait businesses urged to combine vision with tech innovation ...

During his keynote at the high-profile knowledge and networking conference, Sam Alkharrat, Managing Director, SAP MENA, claimed that the business sector in Kuwait is undergoing an encouraging shift towards innovative, value-added business software solutions.

"Companies don't have unlimited funds?they never have," said Alkharrat.

"Today's technologies allow them to take the cost out of non-value add activities and put it back into the value and innovation layer.

Fundamentally, companies need to change the way they run the business and think globally. Whether it's private or public sector, urban or rural, every organization needs a shared vision, the right people to rally around that vision and the advanced technologies so they can innovate."
"IT is no longer on the side-line. IT is the business," added Alkharrat.

"By combining vision with technology, astute business leaders can outperform the competition, create opportunities, and be truly successful in a global economy."

Strong present, strong future

Now in its 40th year, SAP is the world's leading business software company, and recently concluded a successful Q3 2012 as global software revenue increased 17% to ?1,026m (12% at Constant Currencies).

There was also triple digit growth in the key innovation areas of cloud, SAP's in-memory computing flagship offering HANA and mobility.

Kuwait represents SAP's third largest market in the Gulf, with IT market intelligence firm IDC noting the country's 2011 IT spend stood at US $1bn. The company recently inaugurated a new office in Kuwait City.

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is at the heart of SAP's long-term global growth strategy that includes doubling its addressable market, reaching 1 billion people and generating global revenue of ?20bn by 2015.

SAP aims to achieve these goals through a multi-pronged innovation agenda comprising synchronized investments in five interconnected elements: extending a leadership position in Applications, broadening its footprint in Analytics, expanding its reach through Mobile, becoming a profitable leader in the Cloud, and growing the fastest in Technology and Database.

The power of HANA and Customer 360

In particular, excitement is building across MENA, including Kuwait, about the potential of HANA, a ground-breaking platform rooted in-memory computing that transforms business by streamlining applications, analytics, planning, predictive analysis, and sentiment analysis on a single platform to empower businesses in real-time.

SAP HANA customers worldwide include Colgate-Palmolive, Adobe, Bosch and Siemens. Yodobashi, a large Japanese retailer, recently highlighted the technology's transformative potential when it accelerated the calculation of incentives for loyalty customers from three days of data processing, once a month, to two seconds - a performance improvement of over 100,000 times. A further 18 companies have achieved a similar or better performance boost using HANA.

"Ground-breaking innovations like SAP HANA help our customers access and deliver information at unprecedented speeds and empower them with fundamentally new ways to run their businesses better," said Alkharrat.

The SAP 360 Customer solution is the latest innovation to run on HANA. The solution harnesses the power of in-memory computing, cloud, enterprise mobility and collaboration to allow organizations to revolutionize the way they engage with their customers beyond traditional customer relationship management (CRM).

Giving customers comprehensive, 360 degree real-time insight by combining their customer data from transactional systems (CRM/ERP/SCM) with social web data, organizations can personalize each customer engagement through any channel to build loyalty and trust.

Through the real-time execution capabilities of SAP 360 Customer, organizations can execute end-to-end customer processes effectively and efficiently in the cloud, on-premise or on mobile devices

"This is a game-changing solution that will help companies market better, sell better, service better and truly create remarkable experiences for their customers," Alkharrat explained.

"With SAP 360 Customer powered by SAP HANA, companies gain true 360-degree customer insight that is real-time, actionable and available anywhere."

The Power of Small

Alkharrat was also keen to pay tribute to the "power of small" during his keynote, noting that nearly 80% of SAP's customers hail from small and medium enterprise (SME) sector.

"SAP understands the unique needs of small and midsize businesses and entrepreneurs," Alkharrat explained.

"We want to see SMEs in Kuwait that are more agile and able to operate around the clock. We want to see SMEs with enhanced visibility and decision making that can not only lead to better employee productivity, customer engagements and responsiveness, but also help them keep pace with larger companies and gain a competitive edge in their marketplace."

MENA and Kuwait to the fore

SAP is currently in the midst of executing a four-year additional spend plan across MENA.
Highlights include recruiting more than 500 additional employees, opening several new offices and expanding the company's partner ecosystem and the SAP University Alliances program. Additionally, significant increases will be made in the availability of comprehensive, innovative and localized service offerings.

The plans also includes the region's IT-specific Training and Development Center, which will certify more than 2,000 new consultants within the next four years, triple the company's existing consulting capabilities in the region, as well as accelerate and extend the localization and Arabization of SAP solutions.

The first mover initiative is also structured to shape the region's IT future through co-creating and innovating solutions with partners, customers and independent software vendors in fields such as mobility, HANA, cloud, urban management, smart city functionalities, and Islamic banking.

"SAP's investment in Kuwait is hugely welcome, and is set to play a vital part in the country's development and economic diversification," said HE Frank Marcus Mann, German Ambassador to the State of Kuwait, speaking at the recent inauguration of SAP's new office in Kuwait City.

"The German government places the highest importance on the development of IT infrastructure in Germany. IT innovation is worldwide more important than ever before, and I am delighted that a German company shows its commitment to contribute to this development in Kuwait."

PFT: Rice's amazing 4th-and-29 play lifts Ravens in OT

New York Jets v Seattle SeahawksGetty Images

Seattle Seahawks cornerbacks Richard Sherman and Brandon Browner continue to deny that they have ever taken performance-enhancing substances despite facing four-game suspensions for testing positive.

According to Mike Garafolo of the USA Today, Sherman is saying that he unknowingly ingested Adderall prescribed to a teammate according to a person familiar with Sherman?s explanation. Sherman?s agent, Kevin Poston, would not speak on the specifics of the case but when presented with the scenario described Poston said, ?What appears is not always the case. Hopefully, when the facts come out, justice will prevail.?m

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network also reported the scenario described by Garafolo.

Sherman, however, is completely denying that?s what took place. In a series of texts Monday night, Sherman disputed the accounts being reported by the USA Today and NFL Network.

?It?s totally false,? Sherman said. ?It will be resolved in time and I have never taken anything.?

Sherman has denied ever taking Adderall since the suspensions were first reported on Sunday.

Browner?s agent, Peter Schaffer, also denied the claims against him client.

?I can tell you that Brandon Browner has no knowledge of how any illegal substance could have gotten into his system,? Schaffer said. ??He takes tremendous care of his body and he is very careful with what he puts into it. We?re exploring all avenues to try and figure out how any substance out of the ordinary would be in his system.?

Per Garafolo, Browner is already in the league?s substance-abuse program following an undisclosed incident while playing for the Denver Broncos in 2005. Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com was on Sports Radio KJR in Seattle Monday morning and relayed Browner?s denial of taking any performance-enhancing substance knowing how frequently he is tested due to being in the substance-abuse program.

?[Browner]?s someone who?s tested regularly; up to three times a week,? La Canfora said. ?So he?s told people, ?look, I knew what I was up against. I don?t even drink a beer because I?m so wary of having a positive for anything.? So he?s been adamant that ?I?m not on anything. I?ve gone out of my way not to put any sort of substance, supplement, or anything other than what you would normally eat and drink.??

Schaffer said they received notice from the league about the positive tests last week. He said normally hearings for these matters are usually scheduled within 20 days of the notice being sent but circumstances could require it to take longer. Schaffer said he wasn?t sure how long it would take for this particular hearing to come about.

?It?s too early to tell what we?re going to need, what witnesses and evidence and experts are going to be required so there is no way to even guess at this point,? he said.

Until those appeals are resolved, both Browner and Sherman are eligible to play for the Seahawks. Head coach Pete Carroll said Monday that he fully expects to have them available for this Sunday?s game against the Chicago Bears.

Walk, Bike, Swim Your Way to Better Hearing | Hearing Aid News ...

In this world of confusing and conflicting information it is sometimes difficult to know what is good for us, and what isnt. The latest hot diet or a popular herbal supplement might be touted as the miracle cure-all, only to be dispelled later when new scientific data unearths the harmful side effects.

With all the fads that are thrown at us, how do we separate fact from hype? How can we know what is truly beneficial for our health, and what is outright dangerous?

One way to debunk the myths beyond relying on common sense ? is to look at the validity and longevity of various claims. Ask yourself: has a particular claim been verified and endorsed by the mainstream medical and scientific community; does it withstand the test of time; or is it just a flash in the pan?

While many so-called facts will fall by the wayside, one steadfastly remains: a link between regular cardiovascular workout and improved hearing. Simply put, maintaining healthy blood vessels and heart through exercise can benefit your ears.

Be Fit, Hear Better

Past and current studies conducted at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio show a direct relation between cardiovascular (CV) fitness and better hearing.

Though hearing acuity and, ultimately, hearing thresholds, are not entirely under our control, changes in certain aspects of physiological health have been shown to impact hearing sensitivity, says Kathleen Hutchinson PhD, Chair and Professor of the universitys Speech Pathology and Audiology Department. Namely, cardiovascular health has been shown to have a synergistic relationship to a persons hearing. We have proven in prior studies that cardiovascular health is linked to hearing thresholds.

Dr. Hutchinson is referring to the research study she and her colleagues, Helaine Alessio, Ph.D., of the Department of Kinesiology and Health, and Rachel Baiduc, B.S., Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology, conducted at Miami University several years ago.

At that time, we found striking consistency whereby persons with low CV fitness, regardless of age, always had worse hearing compared to age-matched individuals with moderate or high CV fitness, Dr. Hutchinson says. Cardiovascular health and fitness seems to be an important mediator of hearing sensitivity.

New Studies, Same Findings

The team is taking the research further, expanding on the knowledge already gained through its previous studies. For example, another variable, otoacoustic emissions ? sounds produced by healthy ears in response to acoustic stimulation have been added to the tests.

By investigating otoacoustic emissions, a way to evaluate the integrity of the cells in the nerve of hearing, we are provided with another lens to examine the relationship between CV fitness and hearing, Dr. Hutchinson explains. The nerve involved in hearing has the very important job of collecting sound gathered by the outer and middle ear and preparing it for transmission to the brain.

For this study, subjects underwent a battery of hearing tests, including otoscopic examination (observation into the subjects ear to ensure that occlusions interfering with the testing process, such as wax build-up, were not present), pure tone hearing thresholds (subjects would indicate when tones of various loudness and pitch were heard to determine a threshold), tympanometry (a measure of ear drum mobility), and others.

Preliminary analysis of the data, Dr. Hutchinson says, reveals a link between hearing and a high cardiovascular fitness level. Though these results clearly produce clinical significance for persons with hearing loss, they are also relevant to all listeners, she says. By maintaining a high level of cardiovascular fitness, even in older age, individuals can help to preserve their delicate hearing system. It is highly recommended that unfit individuals begin even a moderate-intensity workout regime if there is history of hearing loss in the family. Cardiovascular fitness levels do decrease in most people with age, regardless of sedentary or active lifestyles. However, by keeping as fit as possible, one not only lessens the chance of health concerns related to being unfit, but also increases the chance of sustaining normal hearing thresholds even into old age.

The Heart Knows

The fact that the heart muscle needs regular conditioning is nothing new. Doctors have been telling us for years that exercise makes us more resistant to stress, heart attack, and a slew of other health complications.

For optimum results, the American Heart Association advises doing 30 to 60 minutes of aerobic exercise at least three or four times each week. Unfortunately, studies show that 60 percent of American adults don?t get the recommended amount of physical activity, and a quarter of all adults are not active at all.

But too often the word exercise gets a bad rap, because many of us think of it in conjunction with feeling the burn, that unpleasant sensation of tears and pulls all over our bodies.

Relax; there is no need to huff, puff, sweat, or suffer because moderate exercise, if done regularly, is just as effective as the high-impact kind, and far less harsh on the joints. Such enjoyable and fun activities as walking, hiking, biking, and swimming are an excellent cardiovascular workout, doctors say, and dont require expensive equipment or gym membership.

As the studies clearly indicate, the key to a better hearing and a good overall health is, literally, just an easy step or lap away.

Remember: stay fit. Your heart and ears ? will thank you for it.

iBrattleboro.com - BMH's New DaddyViews Blog Hits Fatherhood ...

HealthBrattleboro Memorial Hospital?s new DaddyViews blog launched earlier this month, following a contest to find five fathers who bring a wide paternal perspective to the parenting blogosphere.

Daddyviews.com (http://daddyviews.com/) updates several times a week with information and tips about local businesses, restaurants, childcare and family-friendly events. BMH?s Communication and Graphic Design Specialist Nicole Zinn says the goal is to provide a one-stop shop forum for busy dads and families in Windham County and the surrounding area.

?Dads today are getting more involved in exchanging and sharing ideas -- particularly online,? Zinn says. ?Our goal is to help facilitate dialogue between local dads and families on health-related topics and more.?

Zinn says the five bloggers bring a wide array of viewpoints. Caleb Clark and Matt Schibley are both first-time fathers, for example, but Clark shares the experience of being over 40 years old and a first-time father while Schibley offers a younger parent?s perspective.

Michael Luciani has two sons who are six years apart in age and as such require very different parenting lessons. ?I try to be good scaffolding for them as they learn to do things on their own - from riding a bike to using Facebook for the first time,? he says.

Jesse Eldridge says his life ?completely changed? after entering a new relationship with a woman who had a four-year old daughter, whom he has adopted. ?I went from a twenty-something year old with no real direction in life, to a responsible adult with a family to take care of. I am not her ?real father,? but I am the father figure in her life,? says Eldridge.

Stephen Washkevich is playing the role of stay-at-home parent to his two children while his wife goes to work. ?I quickly had to pick up the skills necessary to manage an infant and a four year old from dinner to bedtime, and breastfeeding visits in between. It was a sharp learning curve,? he says.

Full biographies of each blogger are on DaddyViews.com. Zinn says people can join the BMH Facebook page to be notified when new posts are added. The address is www.facebook.com/bmhvt.

By Lori Preuitt, NBCBayArea.com

A wild scene played out Friday night at a house party in east ?San Jose.

In the end one, San Jose police officer was dragged through the house, dozens of officers were attacked by flying glass bottles (two were injured) and 42 residents were under arrest.

Police said it all started just before 11 p.m. when neighbors on Patt Avenue called 911 to report shots fired.?

When the first officers arrived on scene they said they found a large party. They immediately noticed a few of the party-goers jumped the fence into the back yard.

Police said some in the group then started throwing glass objects at the officers. One officer was struck by an object and then someone attempted to drag him to the rear of the house, according to police.

The officer was able to escape. A second officer was also injured as a result of the incident. Both officers were treated by medical staff.

Police said people both inside and outside the home continued to throw objects at the officers and refused to cooperate.

Officers called for back up and took up a position of safety and attempted to make contact with the residents, but they were met with resistance, according to police.? Some 60 officers were called to the house.

After a short standoff everyone on the property "surrendered."

In the end 42 people were arrested. Some of them will face charges of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer.

Those facing the most serious charges were booked into the Santa Clara County Jail or Santa Clara County Juvenile Hall and others were issued citations and released at the scene.

Marc Anthony comes to aid of Dominican orphanage

(AP) ? Singer Marc Anthony is coming to the aid of an orphanage in the Dominican Republic.

A foundation run by Anthony with music and sports producer Henry Cardenas plans to build a new residence hall, classrooms and a baseball field for the Children of Christ orphanage in the eastern city of La Romana. Anthony attended the groundbreaking ceremony Friday with his model girlfriend Shannon de Lima.

Children of Christ Foundation Director Sonia Hane said Anthony visited the orphanage previously and decided to help. His Maestro Cares Foundation raised $200,000 for the expansion on land donated by a sugar company. The orphanage was founded in 1996 for children who were abused or abandoned or whose parents were unable to care for them.

Re: Upgrading from FTM 2011 to FTM 2012 - Family Tree Maker ...

I would definitely upgrade to FTM2012. There are dozens of updates and changes from FTM2011 - even not counting the sync feature (which I don't use either).

What some users do, including me, is to identify our file names with the version that file is associated with. For example, before I upgraded to FTM2012, my file was xxx2011.ftm and was in:

FTM2011 Data Files
....xxx2011.ftm
....xxx2011media (folder) - with contents.

I then created new folders:

FTM2012 Data Files
.... xxx2012media (folder with contents)

I copied xxx2011.ftm to the 2012 file and changed the name in Windows explorer and also copied all of the contents of the media folder.

I then brought up xxx2012.ftm in FTM2011 and made sure I had everything - the number of individuals agreed, sources, images, etc. I also went into media and used the FTM edit to find unlinked images and told FTM to find any it found.

I then exited FTM2011 and installed FTM2012 and told it to open the file xxx2012.ftm. That file will be changed by FTM2012 and cannot be read by earlier versions.

I have the data files associated with each version of FTM for the past 10 years on my hard disk.

Pleasantly Demented: My Big, Fat Homeschooling Blog Post

*For reference, I am sticking a link to this post at the top of my blog.? And you are always welcome to message me on facebook or email me at pdemented@gmail.com if you have questions I don't answer here.

_______________________________________________________________________ ?

My little bugsies are almost growed.? They've been homeschooled pretty much from day one.? I think Jake made it to the middle of first grade.? Andrew never made it past preschool.? His preschool teacher took it upon herself to diagnosis a 4-year-old little boy with ADHD because he liked sticking his fingers in the fan and wouldn't sit still for story time.? That just happened to coincide with Sarge getting orders to South Korea.? I took them out of school, we moved across the world.? We actually did have every intention to put them back in school when we got back to the States.? Then we got back.? And I really cannot explain what Sarge and I saw in our boys that made us change our minds.? There was something about them that was just different.? We never put them back in school.

I spent the next several years patchworking every kind of curriculum I could think of.? Everything from the little workbooks at Wal-Mart, all the way to full-on school-at-home with Calvert School.? I read an article on the Department of State website geared toward foreign ambassadors and Calvert School was one of the distance education options they suggested.? Good enough for ambassadors, good enough for my kids, right!

I beat myself up.? A LOT.? If I regret anything, it would be that.? Beating myself up for not being organized.? For not sticking to a schedule.? For not sticking with a curriculum.? For not forcing them to do schoolwork.

I beat myself up because I thought I was ruining them.? I would never be good enough.? They would never be good enough.? They would grow up and hate me.? On and on it goes.

Honestly, it wasn't until about 3 or 4 years ago when I quit beating myself up and made a decision.? Although, I never really told anyone that decision except my mother.? That decision was to officially become an unschooling parent.? You can read all you ever wanted to know about unschooling here.? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unschooling I read a lot about John Holt's philosophy, read Sandra Dodd's blog.? I had really been doing it all along, I just kept trying to be something I wasn't and would never be.? But it was at this point when I just let go.? I completely let go.?

I didn't tell anyone because I knew the whole thing had the potential to be a gigantic clusterfuck freight train headed for disaster.? I knew that would be the thought process of everyone who knew, and they'd all be looking at me out of the corners of their eyes just to see the train wreck.? Perhaps, I thought, if I don't tell anyone and this all goes horribly wrong, maybe I'll still have time to fix it?? I don't know.

So, I am telling you now.? And anyone who wants to know.? My kids were unschooled.? We don't have textbooks.? Or desks.? Or school hours.? Or any kind of studious discipline.

They take standardized tests every year, as per North Carolina homeschooling law, but they just fill in the little bubbles randomly, I send it off to be machine graded, and stick them in a folder.? I have never even looked at the stanines, or whatever the fuck it's called.? Nor do I care.

My kids have taught me more than school ever did.? I truly believe this experience has turned me into a different person entirely.? Watching my kids discover their world.? Teaching them how to learn, fostering in them a passionate desire to want to learn.? Do you know what is more amazing that your child running through the front door waving an immaculate report card at you?? Watching your kid teach himself a musical instrument, and actually wind up being ridiculously talented enough to stand up next to professionals.?? Watching that child you thought would never learn to read.... teach himself how to read.? And not with books or worksheets.? But just during the normal course of his life.

I stopped pretentiously dogging on formal schooling long ago.? It's a bullshit attitude to have.? A lot of kids thrive in school.? They have wonderful experiences.? So, I am only going to say this once.? The other thing you learn the most when you have unschooled your children is.... okay.... this stings... but.... how little formal secondary education matters.?? And how quickly an enterprising child who loves to learn is able to teach himself the few useful things he needs to know to move into adulthood.? I listen to both of them talk.? I have conversations with them.? In the course of those conversations, I tell them things.? Things I knew they probably did not know because they never went to school.? And I will tell them these things, and then they say, "Duh, Mom... everyone knows that."? You know, obvious shit like how the axial tilt of Uranus makes it look like it's tipped over on its side.? Sorta like, everyone knows Mickey Mouse, and everyone knows Uranus has an axial tilt of 97.77 degrees.? Duh.? Idiot.?

Andrew does that all the time.? And I think he surprises me most because he's not nearly as.... uuuhhh... vocal as Jake is.? Jake will just verbally slap me in the face and say, "Shit, I didn't even go to school and I know more than you." And I smile.? And nod my head.? Because he's right.

But this blog post really isn't supposed to compare my own way of teaching my children to any other mode of education.? This is not intended to convince anyone of anything.? Or to spit hatred toward formal education.? Or any of that.? Because I don't hate formal education.? I just chose not to pursue that for my children.? The purpose of this blog post is simply advice.? I have had a lot of people over the years, and even more lately, ask me about homeschooling.? They ask for advice, where to look for curriculum, how to start, all of those things.? So here goes.

First, check out HSLDA.? The Homeschooling Legal Defense Association.? There, you will find the homeschooling laws and governing bodies for your state.

For North Carolina, it is The Department of Nonpublic Education.?

Go to those websites.? Read, read, and read.? Follow the law.? Do the things you are supposed to do.? Some states have more lenient laws than other states.? But know that no matter where you live, you aren't just going to fall off the grid.? You are answerable to someone.? Like it or not.

Second thing.? And this paragraph is most important.? Decide on how you want to teach, or not teach, your children.? Decide on a curriculum.? And then..... realize that this will change with the wind.? At any given moment.? Anytime.? All the time.? You are going to start homeschooling just like a kid on the first day of school.? Brand new backpack, brand new Lisa Frank pencils and pencil box.? Brand new Trapper Keeper.? Brand new clothes and shoes.? Everything smells new and exciting.? And by the time Christmas break comes around, you're ready to stick an ice pick in your ear.? Homeschooling is no different.

Some homeschooling moms have the perfect personality for this.? They love charts.? They love being organized.? They love playing school.? They make a goal and keep it.? They dig in with both feet and barrel through it with guns blazing.

And then, there is you.? You are going to hate yourself.? Your charts will get lost beneath the electric bill and accidentally thrown in the trash.? You will have conversations with other parents about what their kids are learning in school, and will immediately be absolutely certain that your children are mentally retarded and it's all your fault.?? You will assume all of this means you were not cut out to be a homeschooling parent.? And you will assume that your only choice is to relent and run to your nearest principal's office.? At this point, many parents quit.? Those are the parents who say, "Yeah, we tried it for a while, but it just wasn't for us."? If you choose to do that, there is no shame in it.? You do what you think is right for your child.? Full stop.

If you choose to stick with it, I will say this.? Don't do what I did.? Don't beat yourself up.? Have faith.? And that is coming from someone who barely believes in oxygen because she can't see it.? Have faith.? Have faith in yourself.? But more than that, have faith in your child.? If you believe in him or her, they will feel it.? If you truly believe they are smart, it will rub off on them.? If you value your child as a human being, if you ask their opinions and mean it, if you have conversations with them about real-world topics, you are telling them they you believe they are smart enough to keep up, and then, they will go make themselves smart enough to keep up.? See how that works?

Along with faith, be real.? Be real in front of your children.? Have faults, and talk about them.? Fuck up, and apologize.? Relate to them with real-life stories.? And listen to theirs.? What does any of that have to do with homeschooling?? Because you are making yourself more than a parent.? You are making yourself a human being they respect.? If they respect you- not as an authority figure, but as a human being- they will listen to you.? They will hear you.? They will consider your words, allow your words space in their brains.? They will know that you might not always have an answer, and if you don't, you'll find one, and then you'll show them where you found it, and now they magically know how to find answers for themselves.

After a while, once you're done with the initial freak-out, once you've spent gads of money on all sorts of curricula only to toss it all out the window in the second month, and then spend the next 10 months blaming yourself for it.? Once you've gotten over that, school becomes a non-issue.? Totally a non-issue.? That might happen sooner for some of you, much later for others.? It was much, much later for me.? Like, 2-3 years ago.? I did not belong to any parenting or homeschooling support groups.? I knew a few homeschooling parents, but they were nothing like me.? Even the unschooling ones.? I just never fit in.? Hell, the boys' cub scout pack was almost entirely made up of homeschoolers, and that was a fucking joke.? That shit had to be the most pretentious and self-important bunch of human beings I had ever met.? And my kids never liked their kids, either.?? So, whenever I had a "Oh my god, my kids are going to be on welfare and they will hate me forever" moment, I had no one else who could relate to me and tell me what to do, or how to feel.? I learned on my own.

A lot of unschooling parents do subscribe to the theory of doing a bit of actual school work in the older high school years.? And if that makes you feel better, go for it.? But I think you might find that once your kids are that age, they will want to learn it.? They will find their own websites and information.? Because you taught them that.? You taught them to love learning.? You taught them how to find answers.? So when the idea of going to college becomes a little seedling in their mind, and you show them the kinds of things most high school seniors need to know (meaning, really, honestly need to know.? Meaning, seriously.? Considering most college freshman years are spent reviewing everything you just learned in high school), they will sit down and learn it.? More than likely, it will take them a month or so.? Maybe shorter.? Maybe longer.? But you won't have to do anything.? You've already done your job.? Going over and nudging shoulders with your kid and trying to "teach" just annoys the hell of out them... because they're busy learning shit.? And you're in the way.?? See how that works?

This is the point where I am going to give you some more links.? I'm going to look in my school folder in my bookmarks and pick out the ones I think are most helpful.? These should get you started pretty quickly on the road to that emotional breakdown that will cause you to either 1) Give up and enroll them in school tomorrow, or 2) Feel absolutely right in your element, your kids are thriving, you're proud of them, and all is right with the world.? Or, 3) Lie to yourself with daily Stewart Smalley-esque affirmations until, 10 years later, it finally becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, and you go online to your blog and admit to the world that you don't teach your children dick or squat.? And they are still fucking brilliant.?

I have also written a few two posts on the subject over the years.

Top Ten Homeschooling Lessons I have Learned

Socialization is For Puppies

I have tons more links.? TONS. MORE.? And giving you my opinion on any of them wouldn't matter.? First, because I really don't have a lot of experience with most of them.? Second, and this is the most important thing, every child learns differently.? That is the beauty of being human.? We are all different.? The way we experience the world is as different as the number of humans that walk upon it.? I do not know any parent who wants their child to become another brick in the wall.?? We are not a cookie cutter species.? That is why we are humans.? And not ants.? Or bees.? Or a herd of antelope.? We have self-awareness.? We are curious about our world and our place in it.? What works for my kids might not work for yours.

And lastly, if I had to sum it all up, and give you the absolute best advice I have, it would be these few things.

1)? Be the parent your child needs, instead of molding your child into the kid you want.?

2)? Have faith.? In yourself and your kid.? What you don't understand is that even though you have lost faith in yourself, your kid will think you've lost faith in him.?

3)? When given the choice between worksheets or fingerpaint, always choose fingerpaint.?
