When I first heard what the weekend assignment was, I felt like it would be a good challenge for me to complete. I already knew that I use the internet and texting more than I probably need to, so I wondered how I would fare in the "digital-less" weekend. Actually, the assignment itself altered my weekend plans. Since I couldn't do any work (which requires me dialing into my works network via the internet), I went home and helped my neighbors move to their new house. Since I knew that mobile communication was needed, I decided to only use my cell phone to make calls. I didn't go on social sites or use the internet. During this time, I felt like I was missing certain things because my friends were all still using Facebook and Twitter. I feel that this assignment would have been easier if everyone I knew didn't use them as well (which is impossible I know). I also use my phone and internet to stay updated on sports and look up little tidbits of information throughout the day.
I almost made it to the 5 pm finish line until I had to coordinate a ride back to Madison. My neighbor's new place is out in the country so cell phone signals to talk were bad. I had to get just enough bars to send texts, therefore breaking the rules of the assignment, in order to contact my ride. After that, I continued to look at real time fantasy football scores and see what I missed on Facebook. I got to enjoy a few movies that I starred in while drinking with my neighbors the previous night.
Overall, I'm glad I got to experience this feeling of being disconnected. I was able to do more "human" stuff while not surfing the web when I was bored so now I can tell myself, "Hey, get off the computer and do something worth while." That is a win in my book.
